China's production and sales of automobiles both broke the five-million unit mark in the first half of 2008. But while the country remains the world's second-largest market for automobiles sales grew at a slower pace due to rising cost of fuel, vehicle purchase tax and inflation, all of which have deterred new car buyers. This scenario has challenged China抯 automotive engineers to improve car design and assembly capability. It has also come as an incentive and sales opportunity for machinery manufacturers and suppliers of vehicle parts.
Complete vehicles: China's exports of complete vehicles recorded a year-on-year growth of 88% in the first quarter of 2008. Exports will exceed 1 million units in 2008 and hit more than 1.2 million units in 2010 -- pushing China into 6th place in the global ranking. China's OEM sector has finally emerged.
Auto components: world automobile companies procured a total of USD 50 billion worth of components in low cost countries before 2007, 70% of which were from China. It is estimated that the Chinese auto GDP will reach USD 103 billion in 2010. A huge potential exists for production of auto components in China.
