CAM advantages for successful hard milling

The secret of hard milling has been existent for a while. The problem lies when people don''t want to recognise the investment requirements necessary in the process. You can''t take any shortcuts and expect to get your desired results. Hard milling is allowing the CNC machine and the cutter in the worst type of cutting conditions, so you have to be prepared for all the possible solutions available to remedy these. You should have a CNC machine with a rigid spindle to reduce vibration; a high quality end mill with proper coating for the application; the expertise and assistance of an applications expert from the cutter company in ensuring the use of the correct speeds, feeds, step-overs and step-downs needed for the material hardness. Too small of a step-over or step-down can post risks minimising the chances of getting good results of having high value; highly accurate and rigid toolholder; and proper CAM software. Previous software for CAM started as general- purpose software. In the past, most companies first began as a CAD firm and later decided to incorporate CAM software in their operations to provide a one-stop shopping environment. However, the toolpath output before was very inconsistent and inaccurate, which caused the CNC machine to run on a rough or ragged path as opposed to a smooth path, resulting in poor surface finish and premature tool wear. The human element One essential part of hard milling that is often taken for granted is human resource. The advanced information that the CAM department should be aware of regarding cutting tools, lasers, probes and machine tool capabilities is that CAM software options have grown tremendously, so a fresh, open-minded internal review of procedures and personnel in the CAM/machining departments is important to ensure that you are not stuck in an "old- fashioned" routine. Every employee should be oriented on what global competition is all about, and this requires personal undertakings for the good of the company''s profitability in retaining the existing jobs. Cutting tools now are more specifically application- designed and coated. All employees involved in the process should be informed about the differences between the various types and their coatings. Using a tool for a wrong application easily affects the other variables to be satisfied. The use of lasers Lasers being part to the hard-milling process have reduced human interference in maintaining the accuracy of picking up each tool. It has also helped in-process checking and replacement of the tool necessary during chipping or wearing. Understanding how the laser works ?including the macros that are used to control the laser ?is necessary as well in ensuring its required maintenance. The probe used in CNC machines for measurement takes another piece of hardware/software needed for better understanding. It is used in in-process checking, and in the alteration of the setup or offsets to bring the part into specifications in some cases. The CNC machine has continued to progress over the years, including a user-friendlier, computer-oriented control. As the capability of the control has increased, the users learning requirements have grown. It is difficult to add more abilities to any product without requiring more involvement and better user interface. If there is an option available, there may be a normal default that doesn''t need to be changed very often, but someone must identify what option is available and when it needs to be changed. CAM software follows the same lead as the given items. Software has been developed and improved over the years according to the user requests and complaints. Many of the new options are added, but the original variation is left available because many users prefer the original output.
