One of Taiwan's leading machinery makers explains its foray into a novel field

Yen Chun Hsia, director of the Guan Yu Group

Yen Chun Hsia, director of the Guan Yu Group

Your group, Guan Yu, specialises in vibratory separators and iron removers. What made you move into nano-crushing machines?
Over the years, in hearing from customers who use our separators, we found that most were dissatisfied with the crushing machines they were using because none could meet their requirements – the powder size was uneven and the powder produced were never as fine as they required, they often had to deal with high wastage and pollution in the working environment, which can be hazardous since it could lead to explosions. On hearing these complaints and becoming aware of the requirements for nanopowders worldwide, we decided to create a new division dedicated to nano-crushing equipment. After investing a huge amount of money and effort in R&D and innumerable trials and failures over many years, we finally conquered the problems and gained absolute success, especially in crushing plants, herbs and fibres into nanopowders, which regular pin, hammer, or jaw crushing machines cannot achieve.

What differentiates these machines from what you call 'regular' crushing machines?
Our nano-crushing technology functions powerfully in crushing minerals, plants, herbs and fibres into sub-micron particles of 0.1 to 1 μm, which regular crushing machines cannot achieve. The grinding chamber temperature is controlled at 30° to 40°C to avoid affecting and changing the character of the raw materials and achieve very high purity particles without contamination. The process can be done in one single operation. The non-mesh design assures almost no wastage of raw materials and no pollution, keeping working environment always clean and hygiene.

Our micronized coal-fired burner works on the same principle. Its eco-friendly design means low energy consumption and less noise compared to traditional coal burners. The micronized particles burn immediately whilst still in the suspension state, which heats up the boiler in a very short time and heats efficiently. Coal consumption is reduced by at least 10 per cent whilst bringing higher heat efficiency. The grinding chamber is equipped with a high eddy-flow grinding device, which crushes the coal chunks into particles that are then blown into the furnace.

What markets are you exploring outside of Taiwan?
So far, we've sold nano-crushing machines in China to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and cosmetics companies as well as paint and construction firms that require nanopowders. We're interested in exploring India, the Middle East and Africa, where we know there is a big requirement for nanopowders materials in the pharmaceutical, health foods and rare earths sector.

In the Middle East, in particular, there are prospects of traditional medicinal herbs being used in more convenient medicated formats, whilst in Africa, the applications will likely for rare earth nanopowders for the construction industry.

Which particular food sectors do you think hold the most potential for your equipment?
Virtually any food that needs to be powdered finely, but also so-called food wastes that can be crushed to make them higher value ingredients and raw materials for health foods, dietary supplements and flavouring ingredients – such as pearls, fish scales, shrimp shells, eggshells and rice bran.

Given the unstable global economy and the heightened competition amongst machinery companies, what particular strategy do you have that will differentiate you from your competitors?
Despite the global recession, we remain optimistic and confident in our machines as an innovation for the global nano trend. Success belongs to the oSNEAKERS
