IN-MOULD labelling (IML) remains popular for labelling products, given that the process offers wider decorating options.

IN-MOULD labelling (IML) remains popular for labelling products, given that the process offers wider decorating options. In this technique, a pre-printed polypropylene label is subjected to a mould that has the shape of the container. The PP label is then added to the mould, and during the curing process, it fuses with the packaging. The process allows the use of one label for the entire container, as well as the use of different materials for decorating. These features of IML containers can bring out the best in a company’s product, differentiating it from other brands on the shelf.

The German company, RPC Bramlage recently introduced a range of IML standard containers and lids for yellow fats and spreads. These come in four sizes, ranging from 250g to 1kg. For maximum flexibility on filling lines, the 250g, 400g and 500g packs fit a single lid, making them fully interchangeable.

The containers are injection moulded in polypropylene and the in-mould labelling enables multi-coloured and intricate designs to be created for the entire area of the packs. This produces a level of finish and detail that could not be achieved by on-pack printing, says the company.

Labels can also be supplied with a metal-effect finish or incorporating a barrier to prevent oxygen ingress.

"As markets become more competitive, we are seeing an increasing market focus on high quality decoration for spreads, and yellow fats in particular, in order to attract attention on-shelf and establish and retain consumer loyalty," said Peter Van Dyck, sales manager of RPC Bramlage.

"IML ideally suits this requirement, while the flexibility of our range allows manufacturers to respond quickly to changes in market demands."
