Indonesia’s mega event attracts big players

Plastics & Rubber Indonesia 2018 incorporated Drinktech Indonesia, Plaspak Indonesia, and Mould & die Indonesia, and highlighted the latest in packaging technologies and materials.  

Plastics & Rubber Indonesia 2018, Indonesia’s leading exhibition for the plastics and rubber industry held a successful edition from November 14-17, 2018 at the JIExpo Kemayoran, Jakarta. Plastics & Rubber Indonesia incorporated Drinktech Indonesia, Plaspak Indonesia, and Mould & die Indonesia. These concurrent events showcased key technologies in plastics & rubber machinery, processing systems and materials. This mega expo also marked the latest collaboration with Printech Indonesia, a converting, package printing, and labelling technologies trade shows initiated by the Italian machine manufacturers’ association, ACIMGA, to support global expansion of Indonesia’s growing food and beverage industry.

More than 500 exhibiting companies from over 20 countries participated in the 31st edition of this international exhibition which is attended by over 13,000 potential buyers, professionals, and industry leaders. The opening ceremony was led by H.E. Taufik Bawazier, Director of Downstream Chemical Industry of the Ministry of Industry. Representatives from various associations also attended the opening ceremony.

“Packaging plays a vital role for the food and beverage industry. Thus, we connect hundreds of plastics and rubber industry professionals to speed up sustainable packaging, through its material development and process innovation,” said Wiwiek Roberto, Project Director of Pamarindo Indonesia, the exhibition’s organizer.

Recycling innovation and biodegradable plastics (BDP) are among the most effective ways to reduce waste through the use of plastics. Henky Wibawa, Executive Director of Indonesian Packaging Federation (IPF) added. “Retailers will never remove packaging from its process. As it is created to keep products safe for consumption. What we need to improve is how to innovate the sustainable process, through plastic use, waste management and viable plastic alternatives.”

During the exhibition, all visitors also had access to seminars led by key industry associations, including Indonesian Plastics Recyclers (IPR), Indonesian Packaging Federation (IPF), Association of Indonesian Soft Drink Producers (ASRIM), and Komunitas Printing Indonesia (KOPI). The sessions covered the trends, challenges and opportunities for lifestyle and plastic recycling for better packaging systems.

According to Mr. Wibawa, “IPF is always a supporter of this event, and at Plaspak, we contribute by holding a seminar on one of the hot topics in the industry today - sustainability - and this seminar was held in cooperation with ADUPI and Praise, a consortium of seven brand owners. Waste management is one issue that all stakeholders must jointly undertake and we come into conclusion that at present, the government still needs to come up and implement a well-defined policy and should be involved in this issue.” Mr. Wibawa explained.

“The biggest challenge facing the packaging industry is creating eco-friendly packaging to help solve the global sustainability issue and plastics waste. Building knowledge to improve the workforce is highly required, hence the industry will continuously keep up with innovations and intelligent packaging,” said Triyono Prijosoesilo, Chairman of ASRIM.

Participation from key players

A broad range of technologies and plastic materials were offered by the industry’s well-known producers.

Kautex Maschinenbau (www.kautex-group.com) was represented at the exhibition by its Product Manager for KLS-BD Consumer Packaging, Dietmar Michels, and Chief Representative for South East Asia, Louis Koay. “For this exhibition, we promote our all-electric models which are ideal for the Indonesian packaging industry,” according to Mr. Michels. In particular, the KBB blow moulding machines from Kautex is a high-performance machine available as versions for the production of bottles or stackable jerry cans. A key differentiator for the jerry can machine is the use of taller mould platens, increase mould depth and increase mould operating stroke. Mr. Koay added that the Indonesian representative office serves customers in the country and other nearby countries.

The Chen Hsong Group has a sole distributor in Indonesia for its range of powerful injection moulding machines. According to Adhi Utomo Jusman, President/Director of PT. Adi Nusa Glory, “We are the sole distributor of Chen Hsong’s portoflio of injection moulding machines for this market and this partnership has gone a long way with many years of established relationship. For the Indonesian market, Chen Hsong has updated its Jetmaster series to meet the demands of the Indonesian market because this market needs powerful and stable machines due to the unstable power supply being experienced by this country.” As sole agent, Adi Nusa Glory promotes and services the customers who bought Chen Hsong machines in Indonesia.

KBM Extrusions Machines Pvt.Ltd. (www.kbmextrusion.com) is based in Mumbai, India. The company has established expertise in recycling machines. The KBM recycling machine can process washed and contaminated PE film, metalised BOPP films, and heavily printed films. The model being promoted at the show features stable recycling of various types of films, with dosing screw system for control feeding, and at the same time, it consumes less energy and guarantees smooth, easy operation. According to its Director, Gautam K. Makhija, “We export to many countries around the world including South Africa, Dubai UAE and Kenya, aside from Asia. Our factory is located in Mumbai but we serve customers outside India and Indonesia is one market where we see good potential for business.”

SITM PT. Smartpack Machinery Indonesia (www. smartpack.co.id) represents various international brands. In particular, according to its Director, Andrew Tanuwidjaja, the Indonesian agent offers high-pressure compressors from AF Compressors. “AF Compressors is a leading company that offers compressors for the PET blow moulding market.” Along with its factory and headquarters in Belgium, AF Compressors also has production centres in India and China to support these growing markets. “PET blow moulding machines need highpressure compressors and to date, we have established good relationship with many big companies like Danone, Coca- Cola and other beverage companies. Where there are blow moulding machines from Europe, the machines suppliers usually recommend our compressors,” Mr. Tanuwidjaja added.

The Korean brand LS, which supplies inverter, AC servo motor and drive, PLC, HMI, SCADA and other products, is represented in Indonesia by STS Pratama (www.sts-colution. biz) headed by Roberto Cendana, Director. Mr. Cendana pointed out that: “LS through STS Pratama is a trusted partner in industrial and building automation system. We have been serving the Indonesian market and our office in Jakarta handles sales and technical support.” The company’s products are intended for the packaging and plastics industries, and also served the steel industry.

Colines (www.colines. it) from Italy promoted its range of cast stretch film lines technology. The ALLrollEX features new PERFORM-EX extruders with an increased output of up to 15% and allows the processing of both virgin resins and PE and PP blends. Another important innovation is the cast line for multipurpose alveolar coextruded PP sheet, Bubble Guard®. “Bubble Guard® Flex, made of 100% PP air-bubble film, guarantees superior protection, mechanical and optical features than PE air bubble film,” according to Dario Pagetti,Sales Area Manager at Colines. “In Indonesia, we maintain our sales and service office as we are looking to intensify the promotion of our products in the ASEAN market.” Our technologies are ideal for the Indonesian market because of their ability to lower power consumption,” Mr. Pagetti stressed.

PLASCO Engineering Inc. (www.plasco.com.tw) from Taiwan participated at the exhibition to promote its monofilament extrusion lines and strapping bands lines. According to Tony Wang, General Manager, “We find the Indonesian market quite difficult to penetrate as this is priceoriented but we are always optimistic because this is a big market in the ASEAN region. While our office in Taiwan undertakes sales and technical support, we are hoping to find a partner here in Indonesia.” Mr. Wang also explained that of the other ASEAN countries, the company finds Vietnam a receptive market for its products.



Leistritz SEA Pte Ltd. (www.leistritz.com) works with an agent in the Indonesian market but at the Plastics and Rubber Indonesia, the company is also represented by William Loh, Project and Process Engineer from Leistritz Singapore branch. “In this exhibition, we promote several of our products, one of them is the classic compounders ZSE CC Series, which is ideal for the Asian market,” according to Mr. Loh. The ZSE CC Series is the optimum machine for compounders and masterbatchers with a high awareness for quality and top performance. “This model has critical parts made in Germany but the whole machine is assembled in China,” Mr. Loh explained. Leistritz has already quite a number of customers in Indonesia having long been present in the market.

Bilplast Grapindo (www.bilplast-grapindo.com), a onestop shop for plastic processing machinery, had a large booth consisting of the various brands and types of machineries it promotes to the Indonesian market. According to its President/ Director, Billy Tjang, “Bilplast Grapindo offers a wide range of plastic processing machinery for the Indonesian packaging industry, which up to now is growing in terms of demand. Every year, Bilplast Grapindo is present in this exhibition and each year, we see growing interest in the brands we offer.”
One brand demonstrated at the Bilplast Grapindo booth included the high precision injection moulding machine and high-speed injection moulding machine for thin-wall products from PowerJet.
