Malaysia plans to boost digital connectivity country-wide as the government acknowledges that improved digitisation has become “a vital aspect” in the daily lives of the people.
Even more so in times when the country is dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, Malaysia’s state news agency Bernama cited communications and multimedia minister Saifuddin Abdullah as saying.

The minister said he had a meeting with representatives of various ministries and agencies, including the education and higher education ministry, the Communications and Multimedia Commission and the Malaysian Digital Economic Corporation, on the issue.

The officials found that comprehensive digital connectivity and the enhancement of the country’s digital infrastructure in terms of coverage, quality and level of capability would not only be useful for the population in their daily activities, but also be critical to revive the country’s economy after the pandemic.

Saifuddin added that improvements in digital connectivity would also create new jobs and business opportunities in fields such as e-commerce, and also facilitate new ways of teaching in the education sector. Improved digitisation of small and medium enterprises was also important, considering the sector’s employment creation potential and its role as a major contributor to Malaysia’s economy.

As a next step, the government will now seek the cooperation of local authorities, as well as other agencies and private parties to facilitate the enhancement of digital infrastructure.
