VIET-UC Seafood Corporation’s shrimp farm has officially been certified as a disease-free breeding facility by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The company, the first in Vietnam with OIE certification, was duly recognised on 25 November 2018 in Bac Lieu city, according to VNA.

Viet-Uc has been working with the provincial Departments of Animal Health and of Agriculture and Rural Development in building a safe shrimp production chain since 2015, and met the OIE standards in October 2018.
The OIE recognition is expected to create opportunities for Vietnam’s shrimp sector, and help the country meet its USD 10 billion export turnover in 2025, according to Chairman of the National Assembly’s Committee for Science, Technology and Environment Phan Xuan Dung.
Shrimp exporters raise competitiveness
In a separate report, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that local shrimp exporters are capitalising on intensive processing to enhance the value of their products amid competition. Vietnam has some 100 shrimp processing plants with average capacities ranging from 500,000 to 700,000 tonnes per year. According to VASEP, these plants have doubled their capacities in a short period of time. The association also said that industry players need the government’s assistance in planning, infrastructure investment, and control of trading of antibiotics and other harmful chemicals, as they all work toward sustainability.
