A new Kline study explores growth possibilities for specialty biocides in Southeast Asia
SOUTHEAST Asia is one of the fastest-growing and most attractive biocide markets worldwide. The region is forecast to expand at 5% from 2014 through 2019, faster than the projected 2% and slightly less than 1% growth for Europe and the Unites States, respectively.

A new report from global consulting and research firm Kline & Company titled “Specialty Biocides: Southeast Asia Market Analysis and Opportunities” points to rising consumption in Southeast Asia as one of the drivers of growth in the region. Economic growth, increased health and environment awareness, a supplier base composed of multinationals, and imports from China and Japan are the other key factors that will boost the region’s biocides market.

“As Western markets’ growth potential diminishes due to market maturity or regulatory hurdles, the Southeast Asian region represents an attractive opportunity for biocides suppliers, notably in industrial and water applications,” said Nikola Matic, industry manager, Chemicals & Materials practice at Kline & Company.

The new report from Kline summarizes the findings and conclusions of the first comprehensive survey of Southeast Asia’s complex and fragmented specialty biocides market. The survey analyzes in detail the use of seven classes of specialty biocides and more than 40 specialty biocide products in 16 major end-use applications, and the various influences affecting consumption.

http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-images-molecules-bacterias-image28797809#res349236According to the report, economic progress is fueling demand for biocides in the construction, packaging, transportation, and consumer products industries, which in turns propels key end-use industries in industrial preservation applications such as paints and coatings, adhesives and sealants, and synthetic latex polymers. Industrial preservation applications currently lead demand in the region and account for the largest consumption of specialty biocides both in terms of volume and value.

Water-based adhesives and paints are growing fast, owed mostly to trends for low volatile organic compound (VOC) emission, which are gaining ground in Southeast Asia. The shift from solvent-based formulations resulting from greater public awareness about environmental sustainability issues is boosting sales of water-based adhesives or paints as these have a low VOC emission and therefore low environmental impact.

Hygiene applications are the second biggest end-use industry with a total volume consumption of 26%. This is expected to expand by 4.6% during the forecast period. Growth is linked to rapid urbanization in the region and rising awareness about the importance of effective sanitizers. Growing disposable incomes also contribute to the sector’s growth.

The water treatment industry will likewise witness a healthy growth rate. Economic developments in the region will lead to more power plants and heavy industries.

In terms of volume, nitrogen-based biocides are the leading category in Southeast Asia because of the importance of quats in the region. Isothiazolinones lead the market by value. Other important chemicals include DBNPA, glutaraldehyde, and peracetic acid.

The multinational-dominated market is led by Dow Chemical, although market leaders vary depending on the application because of the market’s fragmented structure. Troy and Clariant are the leading biocide suppliers in the metalworking fluids industry, while Lonza and Celcure Chemicals dominate the biocides market for wood preservation.
