Held every two years, TaipeiPLAS, remains a well-attended event in Taiwan as visitors flock to the exhibition to witness the innovations of Taiwanese manufacturers. The 2016 edition, held from August 12 – 16 at Nangang exhibition center was jointly organized by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and Taiwan Association of Machinery Industry (TAMI). It attracted 18,062 visitors from both domestic and international origins. The negotiated orders at TaipeiPLAS 2016 was believed to have reached as high as US$159 million.
As the sixth largest exporter of plastic and rubber machinery products globally, Taiwan’s major products include injection molding machines, extrusion machines and blow molding machines. Despite the sluggish global economy and tough competition posed by foreign companies, Taiwan has managed to stand out. At this year’s exhibition, four significant developments that serve as driving force in Taiwan’s plastics industry were noted and mentioned by exhibitors.
Sustainability, smart manufacturing and new materials
The conservation of resources and drive toward zero pollution were noticeable from many exhibitors’ booths as they adhere to the growing concerns among the general public on environment protection. This trend has been changing the plastics and rubber industry in general. In this aspect, Taiwan’s plastics machinery production has taken great strides with improvement in speed, efficiency and sustainability.
On the use of revolutionary high performance materials, the Plastics Industry Development Center exhibited their recent research results, including the major development directions of ongoing research on new polymers, TPU foam extrusion, carbon fiber materials and many other advanced techniques. The institution has presented promising technologies that reflect the future of plastics and their practical usage in key sectors including packaging, medical, construction materials, transportation, and other emerging applications.
The other direction tackled at TaipeiPLAS revolves around the topic Industry 4.0 – which marks a continuation of the global emphasis on this critical theme. Although there remain some limitations and orientation of this trend in different industries, it is very exciting to note that a lot of Taiwanese plastics machine builders have successfully understood the importance of Industry 4.0 and taken initiatives to pursue its goals.
The trend observed from this year’s edition is the confirmation of Taiwanese machine builders’ commitment to provide specialized machine tools. Given the strong background of Taiwan-based companies in designing customized machine tools in the plastics and metalworking industry, the plastics machine builders are developing more industry-specified tools at a more professional level. These machines and tools are used in such fields as medical, recycling, food packaging, optics and household electronic products.

The Vice President of Fong Kee, Charles Wei, pointed out that the intelligent blow molding machine is the main equipment on exhibit at the company’s booth. It is fitted with servo controlling system, and successfully adjusted the drawbacks of traditional hydraulic machineries in achieving 50% less electricity cost (electricity cost comparison: previously 0.61kw/1kg plastics v.s. 0.29kw/kg). It also elevated 14% of its production. The blow molding machine operates at zero pollution, which makes it perfect for the medicine and food applications. Over 60 years of market existence is not stopping Fong Kee from aiming to expand its representation in more countries as 90% of their products are for export.

The product release from Sun Lung is the “Cloud warning system for gearbox”: a warning system that is the latest innovation from the company. Going digital and integrating the Cloud in their gear boxes, President Stevin Liao expects this novel technique to be adopted by manufacturers in order to produce smarter and for safer operation. The warning system will keep the whole operation of the machineries under surveillance. Making precise judgments in machinery diagnosis, it will assist producers in cutting machinery downtimes. Sun Lung has had a great year with a fruitful success in the Japanese market. Mr. Liao remarked that the system is finally online after one and a half year in R&D. He believes that in an era that is in pursuit of ‘zero-downtime’ in manufacturing, this warning system would monitor accidents that stop the production line from running smoothly and causes potential damages.
