MANY studies have shown the positive effects of deep ocean water to health, owing to the various minerals it contains. In fact, deep ocean water is incorporated in functional food and drinks, skincare, and sports nutrition.
One of the latest research on deep ocean minerals was published in frontiers in Physiology by researchers from Taiwan, Thailand, and the UK, in December 2017. The study focuses on how DOM supplementation (before, during and after execise) affected young and middle aged men during physical exertion (intense cycling) for two hours. During placebo and DOM trials in both age groups (men in their 20s, and men in their mid-40s), data shows DOM raised the men’s cerebral hemoglobin levels significantly compared to placebo, but the effect was more pronounced in middle aged men. With DOM, the subjects improved their muscle power output as blood supply accelerated to the frontal brain.

Based on the data, minerals and trace elements from deep water are effective as part of supplements for increasing hemodynamic response against physical challenge and during post-exercise recovery for middle-aged men. Furthermore, with DOM supplementation, the systemic inflammation of the study group decreased after exercise, according to researchers. DOM may have reduced the amount of damage or increased recovery rate after exercise.
The study warrants further investigations, such as knowing which components of DOM actually causes the cerebral hemodynamic response. Another is to find out if the observed differences between te male subjects were affected by age and weight.
