Held on the 13th of September, organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and TAITRA, the Taiwan machine tool in Aerospace application Forum was fortunate to have Tongtai group to be presented as the speakers from Taiwan. The speakers Director Andrew Kung from APEC, President’s assistant Joseph Chen fromHonorSeiki (Two partners under Tongtai group) and the overseas sale department executive Jolly Wu who represented Tongtai machinery. The three companies are all positioned at different strategic standpoints but come together as one entity in order to knock open the entrance to the new era of aerospace industry in America, having accumulated successful manufacturing experiences in Europe.

As the aviation giants Boing and Airbus are trying to reduce the numbers of their suppliers, this indicated a profound increase of orders for each individual suppliers who were able to become the source of supply for the aviation giants. If this phenomenon had any significant underlying meanings, it would definitely be the message of the positive opportunities for the Taiwanese manufacturers in supplying their high value-added machineries to the center of the supply chain. The reason being that the aviation giants are on the quest for finding sustainable while economical equipment for a long term developmental roadmap.  Taiwanese machine tool builders would necessarily be spotted and being put under the spotlight particularly when there is a trend emphasizing ‘economical value’ as important as the ‘quality’ and ‘security’ of aviation manufacturing. We could thus forecast that the machineries from Taiwan, if successfully made their way to the supply chain of the aviation industry, would become strong players under the transition of aerospace manufacturing.

APEC (Asia Pacific Elite Corp.)

Given the background of APEC’s definite development path in 5-axes machineries and large gantry machines on top of its experiences in supplying machines to the major Taiwanese aviation manufacturers, APEC’s stance in IMTS this year particularly focuses on introducing Gantry type milling machining with linear motors and High precision 5-axis machining centers to the American aerospace industry. Director Andrew Kung reiterated that the position of APEC is in providing valid turn key solutions, replying on the persistent verifications, development and examinations on both their machines and components. APEC has a long list of customer references, including AIDC (Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation, Taiwan), Bosch group, and countries such as Belgium, Switzerland, South Korea, Canada, the U.S. etc. Director Kung stated that APEC owns the most complete solutions for aero machining, whether it is for the machining on engine parts, wing structure for fuselage structure. The machines from APEC can deal with these specific parts as well as special materials, such as aluminium, composites, titanium, and so on. The axes and spindles operate with high rigidity and flexibility to accommodate machining in different shapes and requirements of aerospace manufacturing.

Honor Seiki

Joseph Chen, the president assistant from Honor Seiki highlighted that the company’s strength in producing CNC vertical lathes and customized machines for particular purposes. They have successful experiences in selling vertical lathes to the aerospace industry back in the year 1999, and through continuous commitment in R&D for aviation specific vertical lathes, Honor Seiki has been building up their technological base in the aerospace industry for 13 years – and currently sold 250 sets of machines to aerospace customers world-wide, including Prat& Whitney, Rolls Royce, Barnes, Xi An aeroengine group and so on. Joseph Chen pointed out that the target work piece of the company are the engines, which could be precisely machined by Honor’s vertical lathe, vertical turning center and grinding machine. Recently they have achieved certain milestones in the efficiency of their machines, which can enormously reduce 30% of production time. Joseph Chen believed that in aliening the different advantages of the company under Tongtai group, they would make a strong team and solution provider for the American aviation industry.

Tongtai

Jolly Wu, the executive from overseas sales department shared with the audiences at the Taiwan machine tool in aerospace application forum that the goal for Tongtai group at this visit to IMTS is to jointly come together and identify the platform for the US’ and also the global aviation supply chain in the midst of thesharp increase of aircraft demand for 4-5 trillion USD in the next decades.

In controlling the crucial technological development in machine tools, and being the pioneer of several edge-cutting technique, such as additive manufacturing, and ultrasonic machining technique, Tongtai will be a suitable candidate for supplying machineries not only to the commercial aviation, the forum also helped Tongtai to identify another potential area of the development – which is the unmanned aerospace industry. Acting as the head of a entire strategic partnership of Tongtai group, the primary goal in the short term is to target the supply chain of tier 2 players, with some supplies scattered across tier 1 and tier 3.

Constructing on a successful and long experience that Taiwanese machine tool builders have acquired in the global automobile industry, they are now ready and well qualified to engage in the new age of the global aviation bloom.
