Oxfam Hong Kong brings Fair Trade certified products to Food Expo
THIS economic environment means that Fair Trade products need the support of government, the industry and the private sector more than ever. Although total global sales reached €2.3 billion in 2007 (+47%) and rose 22% to €2.9 billion in 2008, despite the onset of the global recession, further strong growth will improve the lives of hundreds of thousands on marginalized farmers and manufacturers worldwide.
Fair Trade is an effective tool in poverty alleviation as it guarantees fair and stable prices for its manufacturer ; healthy and safe workplaces for the producers; and sustainable development for communities and the environment. This is in line with humanitarian organization Oxfam¡¯s belief of Working with People against Poverty and Oxfam Hong Kong has been promoting Fair Trade since 2006. Today, there are over 50 places selling Fair Trade items in Hong Kong, where sales for such goods from September 2006 to August 2007 is estimated to be at least HK$8.4 million.
Oxfam Hong Kong is supporting five Fair Trade producer groups to join HKTDC Food Expo with a wide range of products ¨C Palestinian olive oil, Filipino specialty snacks, Sri Lankan spices, Thai rice, and Vietnamese tea. Fair trade food producers will be able to meet with registered traders on August 13 and 14, and sell their items to the public on August 15.
