Tata Steel expands metal, steel production

Tata Steel has increased its hot metal & crude steel production. The hot metal production at 1.70 million tones and crude steel production at 1.50 million tones was higher by 23% and 17% respectively as compared to volumes in the same quarter last year.

The Indian machine tool industry is expecting a flat growth in its business this year due to the impact of the global economic slowdown. The industry reached a total business of Rs7600 crore (US$155, 612 at US$1:Rs 49.42) during 2007 to 2008 and is now anticipated to reach only a marginal increase this year owing the reduction in orders, deferment of deliveries and machinery imports making serious inroads.

Flow International completes minority investment in Dardi

Flow International Corp., a developer and manufacturer of industrial waterjet machines for cutting and cleaning applications, has completed its $2 million purchase of a minority ownership position in Dardi International Corp., a waterjet manufacturer in China. Flow announced its intent to purchase the minority position in November 2008, having previously introduced Dardi as the new supplier of its economy segment product line.

China steel production faces weak customer demand

According to Fitch Ratings' 2009 global steel outlook report, China cut steel production in the face of weak domestic and export demand may need to shutter upwards by 20% capacity (high-cost) longer-term. But Fitch expects China to lead demand recovery since excess production would pressure weak markets in Europe and North America.
