The Global Business Forum (GBF) ASEAN looked at economic cooperation and emerging investment opportunities between the UAE and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations, held from December 8-9, 2021 in Dubai.

The economic potential of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the wealth of opportunities that the region offers businesses and investors in the UAE took the spotlight at the first ever Global Business Forum (GBF) ASEAN, held from December 8-9, 2021 at the Dubai Exhibition Centre, Expo 2020 Dubai.

The Dubai Chamber organised the event together with Expo 2020 Dubai under the theme “The New Frontiers”. GBF ASEAN 2021 is the first event in the GBF series to focus on the ASEAN region (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam). The high-level forum brings together government and business leaders from ASEAN markets and the UAE to explore new avenues of economic cooperation and emerging investment opportunities.

The two-day forum examined the changing dynamics of ASEAN region in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as new opportunities being created by digital transformation and trade partnerships. Other topics on the agenda include plans among ASEAN members and their counterparts to create the world’s largest free trade area, based on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreement that will add an estimated $186 billion to global GDP by 2030.

The forum explored ways that ASEAN countries can develop a low-carbon economy to build a more resilient and sustainable future, with Southeast Asia one of the world’s regions most at risk from climate change. Other issues include whether there is such a model as Southeast Asian or Middle Eastern brand of entrepreneurship and how much can Dubai and Singapore, as global hubs for their respective regions, can learn from each other.

According to the Dubai Chamber, attendance was at 1,368 delegates, including 250 virtual participants from the public and private sectors, from 58 countries.

His Excellency Hamad Buamim, President and CEO of Dubai Chamber said: “The total number of participants and sessions are strong indicators that the Global Business Forum ASEAN is off to a promising start, and that the grand event has come at the perfect time to provide a needed boost to the economic and trade relations between the UAE and the region.”

“The Forum offered a platform for decision makers from both sides to exchange views and expertise, showcase the most prominent projects, and shed light on potential opportunities for collaboration that set the stage for future partnership agreements and lay the groundwork for a new era,” said His Excellency Hamad Buamim, President and CEO of Dubai Chamber. “Over the course of two days, GBF ASEAN offered a range of scenarios and commentary about current collaboration efforts and trade relations between the GCC and ASEAN, outlining strategic future scenarios that aim to develop an integrated ecosystem that all partners can benefit from.”

“We can confidently assert that the inaugural Global Business Forum ASEAN has succeeded in meeting its objectives. Our goal was to introduce the local business community to the vast opportunities that collaboration with ASEAN countries will bring to the table, all the while drawing international participants’ attention to the central role that Dubai plays as a gateway into the GCC and Middle East region.”
