Arburg will be presenting the injection moulding technology of the future with a high-end application at Swiss Plastics in Lucerne, from 17-19 January 2012. At Stand A 103 in Hall 2a, trade visitors will be able to view a compact and highly-flexible production cell consisting of a vertical Allrounder 375 V machine and a Kuka robotic system. It will demonstrate the fully-automated production of a toy buggy. Highlights of this application are the simple programming of the six-axis robotic system and the direct communication between the robotic and the Selogica machine control systems.

"In order for our customers to produce moulded parts in optimal quality and at minimal unit costs, we are this year focussing on the topic of production efficiency", explains Marcel Spadini, Managing Director of Arburg Switzerland. "Because it is no longer sufficient to limit our attention to machine technology. Rather, the entire value-added chain and all influencing factors must be taken into consideration in order to provide an optimal injection moulding solution." All these factors increase energy efficiency, reduce cycle times and optimise production organisation, contributing to a reduction in unit costs. The trade fair exhibit will impressively demonstrate that Arburg provides the perfect means to achieve this objective. “Implementation of the Selogica user interface in the control of the six-axis robotic system and the compact, flexible automation solution show that Arburg repeatedly sets standards when it comes to future trends,” says Marcel Spadini.

Complex made simple with Selogica
Automation solutions are becoming increasingly important. At the same time, programming must remain simple and reliable, despite the increasing complexity. This is enabled by the unique Selogica control system with graphic-based sequence programming for the injection moulding machines and robotic systems from Arburg as well as for the six-axis robotic system from Kuka. Consequently, the implementation of the Selogica user interface in the robotic control system brings the user decisive advantages: after just one brief training session, robotic sequences can be independently programmed. The robotic system is directly linked to the machine control system. Online communication extends far beyond the Euromap interface and offers functions such as the synchronisation of movements and simplified machine start-up. This results in shorter set-up and cycle times.

Automation: complex, compact and extremely flexible
An example of the practical application of a six-axis robotic system is the complex production cell based on a vertical Allrounder 375 V. Thanks to the small footprint of the vertical machine and high degree of freedom of the robotic system, this project system offers extremely high flexibility even in the most restricted spaces. For the automated production of a toy buggy, the robot inserts the metal axles in the mould. In an injection moulding cycle lasting 30 seconds, the metal axles are encapsulated with plastic wheels and the roof and chassis are produced. The robot then removes the four individual components and, in a subsequent step, assembles them on the table opposite to produce the finished buggy.

Due to increasing international pressure to streamline and cut costs, the trend is towards complete solutions. "With our modular product range, which permits the customised and industry-specific equipment of machines and systems, we are in an excellent position to implement high-end injection moulding solutions,” concludes Marcel Spadini. A further benefit is Arburg’s expertise in the field of complex production cells, which incorporate upstream and downstream operations. With Arburg, the customer benefits from a main contractor who designs, implements and commissions the sNike Air Jordan 1 Retro
