The Dehyton AO 45 high-performance algal betaine uses renewable microalgae oil.

BASF and Solazyme Inc. have recently introduced a high-performance algal betaine made from renewable microalgae oil.

The first commercial microalgae oil-based surfactant, which will be commercialized by BASF under the trade name Dehyton AO 45, is produced with Solazyme AlgaPūr Microalgae Oils. It is a suitable alternative to amidopropyl betaine for use in products requiring rich and gentle foam such as shampoos, liquid soaps, hand dishwashing liquids, and other home and personal care applications.

AlgaPūr Microalgae Oils are produced with low carbon, water, and land use impact.  Solazyme, renewable microalgae oil and ingredients company, uses state-of-the art technology to produce AlgaPūr Oils in a matter of days. The company adopts a highly controlled fermentation process to convert sugarcane into oils of the highest purity and performance.

Amidopropyl betaines, which are amphoteric surfactants, are increasingly used in cosmetic, toiletry, and home care applications. They are known to have good detergency, foam properties, and foam stabilization while being compatible with hard water. They are mild to the skin and hair, have a conditioning effect, and can reduce irritation of anionic systems. Besides their viscosity building attributes, amidopropyl betaines have excellent biodegradability and remain stable at a broad range of pH.

Josef Koester, marketing director for Home and Personal Care, Sustainability Care Chemicals at BASF North America noted increasing consumer demand for sustainable and innovative surfactants, particularly in the home and personal care markets.

“Combining BASF’s chemistry expertise with Solazyme’s unique range of renewable microalgae oils allows us to deliver products that meet this demand,” said Mr. Koester.

According to Robert Webber, Solazyme chief commercialization officer, “We are excited to partner with BASF to launch the world’s first commercial microalgae-derived betaine surfactant. BASF’s broad capabilities in chemical conversion of triglyceride oils and deep expertise in surfactants enable significant growth opportunities in the future.”
