JEC Asia 2011 Composites Show and Conferences, held on 18-20 October  at the Singapore Suntec Convention Centre, ended on a high note.  For this fourth edition, the show achieved a 10% increase in exhibition space with 345 participating companies that offered a larger range of composites materials and applications.  Also, reflecting the dynamism and huge potential of the Asia Pacific composites market, there was a stronger international presence at the show.  For the first time, delegations from, Indonesia, Iran, Korea, Russia and Turkey joined the show.  Over 7,000 visitors for 60 countries were recorded.
According to the show's organiser, the Asian composites industry is currently valued at $24.8 billion.  It is expected to make up 51% of the global composites market by 2015.
Frédérique Mutel, President and CEO of JEC Composites Group, said: "JEC Asia 2011 showcased a range of new bio-based developments for composites — especially on how the use of natural fibres, replacing the more traditional glass and carbon fibres, is fast picking up market momentum. Natural fibres have the potential to improve the environmental credentials of composite materials, such as bio-based plastics (or bioplastics), at a feasible cost. Such developments are already burgeoning in Asia, with Japanese carmaker Toyota accelerating the use of bioplastics in mass production vehicles."
The exhibition also showcased new composites innovations that are impacting the automotive sector. Based on JEC's annual survey, the adoption of composites materials in automotive end-use currently stands at around 6% of a vehicle's weight. This level of penetration is expected to increase, as advanced composites materials can help automakers to achieve significant weight reduction whilst cutting production costs.
About 800 delegates attended the JEC Asia Innovative Composites Summit (I.C.S.) forums and conferences this year, with a total of 100 papers presented. A most recent development in the industry, carbon fibre was covered since it has become well-known for being increasingly used in automobiles, aeronautics and for other industrial applications because of its light weight and flexibility.
"Market developments in Asia are very encouraging, with Asian production of composites projected to make up 43% of the global composites manufacturing output by 2015. The composites sector is clearly forging a bright future, based on the innovations that were showcased at JEC Asia 2011," according to Mr. Mutel.
Held in conjunction with JEC Asia 2011, the JEC Asia Innovation Awards 2011 recognised breakthrough composites processes and applications development across the Asia Pacific region.  The Awards are handed out based on technical interest, market potential, partnership, financial impact and originality.  This year there were awards in nine composites technology and application categories as well as the Life Achievement Awards.   The Life Achievement Awards honoured two individuals that have made significant contributions to advancing composites growth in Asia Pacific – -Kim Jung Heun, President of Kuen Yung Industrial in South Korea and Chen Shao Jie, Professor at Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute and Executive Director of the Chinese Society for Composite Materials.
Looking forward, the fifth edition of JEC Asia, schedule on 26- 28 June 2012 aims to reinforce its status as the leading composites platform in the Asia Pacific region.
