FOR its 7th edition, Food ingredients Asia 2011 attracted over 9,000 visitors and generated approximately THB 1 billion in business for exhibitors. The event was held from 21ST to 23rd September at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in the heart of the Thai capital.

Prapat Vanapitaksa, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of Thailand's Ministry of Industry, noted that the food industry has played a very important role in building the Thai economy. "We have implemented a 20-year plan which will include upgrading industry clusters, expanding manufacturing network opportunities abroad and enhancing support for integrated management in Thailand," he said. "The plan will also enhance co-operation within the ASEAN community for a sustainable manufacturing system by 2050."

Thailand has a multimillion-worth food industry. In 2011, the food export industry in the country is expected to grow in more than 8% to a value of more than $22 billion (approximately 660 billion baht). In manufacturing processed food, ingredients are the key component.

Fi Asia 2011 also held many interesting seminars, including "The Impact of AEC 2015 on the ASEAN Food Industry" hosted by the National Food Institute, the conference "Food Ingredients Insight: Science and Industry, hosted by the Food Science & Technology Association of Thailand (FoSTAT) and The Federation of the Institutes of Food Science and Technology in ASEAN (FIFSTA), and exhibitor seminars presenting new technologies and study cases.

The integration of the ASEAN Economic Community into one single market in 2015 will lead to liberalisation of almost all industries, ncluding food, free flow of labour and workforce, zero tax, amongst others.  The seminars and workshops were conducted to provide a clear picture of AEC benefits to the industry.Dr Petch Chinabutr, president of the National Food Institute, said their seminar would also help to generate knowledge and recognition for Thailand's growing food industry. The seminar featured speakers from Thailand and the region, and was part of a special conference programme that included presentations by the FoSTAT and FIFSTA.

"We have a great co-operation with many associations, both domestic and international, which play a part in the integration of the ASEAN Community and [are a source of] useful information on regulations, innovations, technologies and product development," he noted. The organiser and official partners have expressed their warm appreciation to all visitors and exhibitors for making the 2011 show a great success. "On behalf of everyone who has helped bring Fi Asia to the success it enjoys today, we extend our grateful thanks," Mr Gandhi said.
