Leader of Australia's E-Health Authority to Speak in Melbourne

Dr. Mukesh Haikerwal (AO) to deliver keynote at HIMSS Australia Conference about the National E-Health Transition Authority

The HIMSS AsiaPac11 Conference in Melbourne, incorporating the Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA) 2011 National Conference, will begin with a keynote address by Dr. Mukesh Haikerwal (AO), National Clinical Lead for Australia's National E-Health Transition Authority (NEHTA). Dr. Haikerwal will share the work NEHTA is doing in establishing a national E-Health infrastructure to better collect and securely exchange health information electronically.
NEHTA is the managing agent for the Personally Controlled Electronic Health Record (PCEHR) program supporting the Australian Government in its commitment that from July 1, 2012 all Australians will have the option to sign up for a PCEHR.
"I am a passionate believer in the benefits of the use of modern technologies in the Australian health system and the impact E-Health can have in enhancing the safety and quality of healthcare in Australia. I encourage you to come and learn about the progress being made towards the goal of connecting the health information of Australians, supporting and improving current practice and optimizing the system for the future, flattening the trajectory of expenditure growth, and making the system sustainable. The prime motivation is that we as consumers can access tools and have better knowledge of and access to information that will improve our own health," said Dr. Haikerwal in a recent interview.
Other best practices in healthcare technology from around the region will be shared during the three-day event to be held from September 20 to 22 at the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre. The conference will feature about 55 speakers from around the world, 72 presentations and 5 panel discussions. From pre-conference symposia and the leadership summit to thought leader programs and education sessions, HIMSS AsiaPac11 offers an opportunity to network with the growing healthcare information industry's best minds.
At the Leadership Summit, Dr. Sarah Muttitt, Chief Information Officer of the Information Systems Division at the Ministry of Health Holdings in Singapore, will talk about the business case for HIT, making strategic investments and measuring benefit as well as extraction of long-term value from HIT investments. Experts in the field from Malaysia, Chile, and New Zealand will also share a range and depth of experiences in healthcare IT and important lessons learned along their IT adoption journeys.
"Given the Australian government's emphasis on healthcare reform, this is a fantastic opportunity to learn from the dialogues that the E-Health authorities have had regarding participation issues, information management, privacy and security, implementation, evaluation, and consultation," said H. Stephen Lieber, CAE, HIMSS President/CEO.
Other topics that will be discussed in the conference include National Health IT Plans, Hospital IT Management in Japan, healthcare going mobile, and the roadmap to going paperless.
There will also be a number of pre-conference symposia and workshops to cater to special streams, such as "Nursing Informatics," "Clinicians IT," and "Mobile Health." The HIMAA will also be conducting a workshop as part of pre-conference activities.
