With medical advancements and the heightening needs of private and corporate clients, Matilda International Hospital (MIH) will focus on facilities and environment upgrades as well as opening its fourth clinic in Kowloon this year. The hospital is also studying plans to add usable space to complement the service expansion.

Enhanced Surgical Environment
The first hospital in Hong Kong to introduce a Hana Table for hip and lower limb procedures. The Hana Table is made from carbon fiber, a high-tech material through which X-ray can penetrate. It also has a specially designed leg support traction system, allowing precise patient positioning to enable improved outcomes.
The Operating Theatre (OT) 3 is now under redevelopment. The new OT3 will feature advanced new capabilities dedicated to orthopedic surgery. A fully integrated system will be installed to facilitate documentation, reporting, and communication functions. Surgical instruments will be efficiently managed by a ceiling mounted pendant to cater for the expanding clinical equipment needs. It is scheduled to commence service in Q2 of 2011. This marks the second OT redevelopment to be launched by MIH following the commissioning in 2010 of one of Hong Kong’s first and most advanced operating theatres, known in MIH as “OT5.”

Kowloon Medical Centre
To extend Matilda’s reach into the corporate community in Kowloon, MIH plans to open its fourth clinic in Kowloon. Key services include GP consultations, health checks, and corporate wellness programs—all part of the strategy to develop centers of excellence in wellness programs. The hospital currently has three clinics (a medical center in Central and two corporate staff clinics in Central and Olympic stations), an outpatient facility, and an executive health assessment unit.

Building Extension
The hospital is studying plans to add usable space to complement the service expansion.

Upgrading Patient Areas for a More Comfortable Stay
The Outpatient Area has been upgraded for more efficient use of space and to embrace a fresher outlook while retaining the charm of the original area. The spacious waiting area adds comfort and light, thus enhancing the patient experience. The Pharmacy will also be renovated to complement the development of the Outpatient Area. The Medical, Surgical, and Paediatrics ward will be renovated to offer a more luxurious and comfortable environment.

 New Services
The Executive Health Assessment Unit recently launched vision screening and bladder scan services. Bronchoscopy, a procedure that allows the doctor to examine the patient’s airways for abnormalities, will be introduced within Q1 of 2011. The procedure is performed with the use of a bronchoscope that can capture images of the inside of the airways. With this, the doctor can detect any foreign bodies, bleeding, tumors, or inflammation inside the airways as well as take specimens from inside the lungs for further examination.

Deployment of New IT System
A new electronic hospital management system with seamless connections between inpatients and outpatients is under development to deliver more effective and efficient healthcare services. This system will eventually be integrated into the government’s centralized database (eHR).
