Hamriyah Free Zone located in Sharjah, UAE.

In a further step to fortify its position as the leading polyurethane (PU) systems and PU raw material supplier in the Middle East, Baalbaki announced that it has commenced construction of its new 40,000 MT polyester and prepolymer production plants on its existing 30,000 sq.m. industrial site at Hamriyah Free Zone located in Sharjah, UAE. The new plant, expected to be operational in the fourth quarter of 2012, will enable Baalbaki to serve the markets in GCC, India, Pakistan and Iran with footwear, rigid, cold cure PU systems, aromatic and aliphatic polyester polyols, as well as specialty PU and food packaging adhesives.

Baalbaki has been a pioneer in the GCC having introduced aromatic and aliphatic polyester polyol technology including "green technology" to produce polyester polyols based on scrap PET. The company remains the only manufacturer of this product in the Arab World and largest manufacturer in the Middle East and Africa regions of this product range, according to Dr. Ihsan Baalbaki, Chairman of the Group, during a dinner held in Dubai on 21 November 2011 in celebration of this new milestone in the Group's development.

Since 1957, Baalbaki has been a pioneer in introducing cutting edge European technologies into the Middle East industrial sector. Under license from Linde AG and Mauser gmbh Baalbaki established in 1957 one of the first factories in the Arab world producing refrigerators, gas ovens and steel furniture. Today, the company is a leading regional industrial Group in the Middle East and Africa regions with manufacturing and technical service facilities in the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Turkey and Syria employing more than 800 people.

The Group's activities in polyurethane started in the late 1970's when it introduced PU spray foam and PU refrigerator systems to the Middle East markets. In anticipation of the large growth in demand for PUs in the Middle East and Africa regions, it established in 1994 the first PU system house in the Middle East with pre-polymer technology and a complete polyurethane product range.

In April 2005, it transferred to its new 15,000 sq.m. production facility in Baalbaki industrial Zone-Damascus Syria. This move put Baalbaki's production of aromatic and aliphatic polyester polyols, isocyanate prepolymers; and formulated PU systems under one roof. By 2010, the Group had added to its network system houses in the UAE and Egypt as well as a technical services and distribution centre in Turkey.

With this new expansion in the UAE, along with the planned expansion during 2012 of pre-polymer and polyol blending capacities in Egypt and Turkey, Baalbaki will have raised its total production capacities in the UAE, Egypt, Syria, and Turkey to 55,000 MT of polyester polyols and 70,000 MT of isocyanate prepolymers. Baalbaki will continue to serve the Levant markets from its existing production facility in Syria, Africa from its existing production facility, and the markets in Egypt and Turkey from its facility in Pendik Instanbul. However, the headquarters of its polyurethane business unit will be relocated to the UAE beginning January 2012, according to Mr. Karim Baalbaki, Managing Director of Baalbaki Group s.a.
