2016 Ringier Technology Innovation Awards-Coatings Industry winners announced

A five-month search for the winners of the 2016 Ringier Technology Innovation Awards – Coatings Industry culminated with 25 awardees given recognition in a ceremony held on May 24 in Shanghai, China. The awardees shared their big moments with the panel of judges, experts from industry associations and media representatives during the awarding ceremony held in conjunction with China Coatings Summit 2016 –Architectural, Wood, Anti-corrosive, Auto, Smart Coatings from May 24-25.

From 56 entries, 26 products in 7 categories were finally declared as winners by the independent panel of judges, as well as through online voting by coatings end-users. The 7 categories are:  Resins, Additives, Emulsions, Pigments, Machinery & Equipment, Biobased Products and Other Innovative Products/Technologies.

The Awardees include BASF(China)Co., Ltd., Wacker Chemicals (China) Co., Ltd., Alberdingk Resins Co.,Ltd., DSM (China) Limited, BYK Additives (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., Air Products & Chemicals (China) Investment Co., Ltd., Evonik Specialty Chemicals (Shanghai) Co.,Ltd., Ashland (China) Holdings Co., Ltd., Elementis Specialties, The Dow Chemical Company, among others.

Looking at the winning products and technologies this year, some important trends were noted, especially in the Resins and Additives categories. Products such as New Crosslinker Larotact®150 For 1K Auto OEM Clear Coat, Synthro-stab TF series formaldehyde scavengers are especially outstanding in terms of environmental protection and better surface appearance.

This year's Award also had some interesting additions. One new category - Biobased Product - was introduced. Another development is that the voting process has become more open; besides the selection by the judges panel and website visitors, Ringier Trade Media utilized Wechat for online voting and hundreds of participants voted through coating wechat channel. Third addition is that the nominated companies must provide more third-party credentials in addition to the basic description of the products, and these included  patent certifications and even experimental data sheets. These materials are very important references for the judges to decide whether the products or technologies are truly innovative. Last but not least, Ringier Trade Media added a new award – “The Innovators of The Year”, to reward a person or a team who led the development of a new product or technology. This year, the “The Innovators of The Year” award was  given to Wanhua Chemical Group Co.,Ltd. for their winning products -- “Oil-Modified Waterborne PUD Lacper® 4215” and “3-Isocyanatomethyl-3,5,5-Trimethylcyclohexyl Isocyanate, IPDI”.

Honesty, fairness and transparency give Ringier Technology Innovation Awards a wider attention and national recognition over the years.  Mike Hay, President of Ringier Trade Media. noted, “It is the independent panel of experts – the judges who play the key role in the selection of the winners, which is one important feature that makes this Award special and different from other award-giving programs in China.”
