“Our patented 23-station turret reduces production time because you have enough live tools to complete complex parts without changing tools,” explained Terry Kisch, general manager North America. “Plus, our dual spindle enables users to machine the inside and outside of a part, producing a complete part at one time. This also improves accuracy because you are not moving the part to a different machine.” The HL-35DMSY has a 10-inch chuck, putting at the high end of capacity for machines of this size. The horizontal lathe has a 2.93-inch bar capacity and 4,000 rpm spindle speed. Kisch said the machine is price competitive with other live tool machines. Typical applications include the medical, military aerospace and automotive aftermarket segments. One notable customer is Paul Huffaker, driver of the Grave Digger monster truck, and owner of Racesource, Inc., which manufacturers specialty parts. Huffaker machines all the components for the shocks for monster trucks using FEMCO machines. FEMCO is one of the many companies at IMTS 2012 that illustrated the growing power of Taiwan’s machine tool industry. Taiwan is the world’s fourth largest exporter of machine tools and ranks sixth overall in global production with sales of US $5 billion. There are more than 500 machine tool manufacturers in Taiwan and it is the country’s most important industry by value, according to officials from the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), which helped support Taiwan’s exhibitors at IMTS 2012.
