The 2025 ASEAN Manufacturing Summit – Creating a Circular Economy for Plastics brought together a powerhouse of industry experts, packaging professionals and recyclers on to discuss innovations towards circularity in plastic packaging and recycling.

More than 150 qualified delegates from Indonesia’s dynamic packaging and recycling sectors joined the 2025 ASEAN Manufacturing Summit in Jakarta on November 5.

 

The 2025 ASEAN Manufacturing Summit – Creating a Circular Economy for Plastics brought together a powerhouse of industry experts, packaging professionals and recyclers on November 5 to discuss the challenges in attaining plastics circularity, and the innovations launched to overcome these challenges. The conference featured 12 distinguished speakers who presented on hot topics in the fields of packaging design, smart manufacturing, eco-friendly materials, plastic recycling, as well as global trends and market conditions. More than 150 delegates from leading packaging manufacturers and plastics recyclers gathered onsite to learn, exchange information, establish business contacts and explore opportunities towards the adoption of sustainable operations.

 

Organized by Ringier Events, the conference received active support from the most influential industry associations, their key officials and members  – the Indonesian Packaging Federation (IPF), Indonesian Plastics Recyclers (IPF), Indonesia ISO Expert Association (IIEA), Indonesian Plastic Recycling Association (ADUPI) and Packaging Development Federation (PDF). The association not only brought in their representatives to present on relevant topics, but also encouraged their members to become proactive in sharing information and networking.

 

The conference was also supported by Business Partners that included Bloom Smart, an innovation-oriented science and technology enterprise develops and manufactures all types of high-grade, precision, and advanced automatic production facilities; Tat Ming Technology Co., Ltd., a leading company in the injection molding industry offering customized solutions; and Zhangjiagang Wolter Machinery Co., Ltd, (WOLTER), a one-stop material handling automation equipment, intelligent factory and advanced materials solutions global service provider. The event also had the special participation of Suryacipta, City of Industry and SmartPolitan, two industrial zones under the management of PT Suryacipta Swadaya. Another highlight of the conference was the Factory Tour organized by PT Suryacipta Swadaya with host companies PT. Indorama Ventures Sustainable Solution Indonesia (IVSSI) and Xiamen Changsu Industrial Co., Ltd.

 

The Summit featured Business Partners that  included Bloom Smart, Tat Ming Technology Co., Ltd., and Zhangjiagang Wolter Machinery Co., Ltd, (WOLTER).

 

High-Level Presentations and Networking for Knowledge Building  

The 2025 ASEAN Manufacturing Summit featured well-chosen highly respected industry experts who shared valuable information and insights through their presentations. The participants learned from the speakers’ first-hand experience in designing and producing sustainable packaging and the intricacies of efficient plastics recycling. 

 

Mr. Henky Wibawa, Executive Director of Indonesian Packaging Federation, opened the floor with his presentation bioplastics and how sustainable bio-based plastics are. He also covered how bio-based plastics can be recycled, plastic trap and paradigm shift via redesigning infrastructure towards regenerative packaging system. An interesting part of his presentation is the topic on alternative materials that are natural and eco-friendly.

Taking from Mr. Wibawa’s introduction, Ms. Deva Dharmapuspa, SC, QHSE, Material Innovation Business Unit Head of Dynapack Asia, presented on the three crucial aspects of green living  bio, recycling, and technology. She began her presentation with an introduction on Dynapack Asia, moving on to discuss the new packaging concept of interconnected circles: technology, bio, and recycle. The presentation covered the production challenges and how Dynapack has been able to create innovative solutions to overcome issues on color, lightweighting, environmental impact and shelf life.

The emerging design trends and techniques in eco-friendly packaging was discussed by packaging design expert, Mr. Rully Zuliandri who is currently the Technical Specialist & Packaging Development Specialist of GMS Pacific. GMS Pacific offers intelligent cost-effective solutions for label and packaging printers. Mr. Zuliandri started his presentation with a take on the prevailing design trends mentioning some product brands as examples. He also cited the importance of knowing consumer demands as first step in packaging design.

Mr. Jeffri Ricardo, Senior Manager of Public Affairs and Sustainability of Danone Indonesia, focused his presentation on how AQUA has been true to its commitment in advancing sustainable packaging for a circular economy.  As packaging plays a vital role in maintaining product quality and must be managed responsibly, AQUA, a pioneer of sustainability in Indonesia, adopts systematic approaches to reduce environmental impact and continuously innovates eco-friendly packaging solutions. The company has embarked on reducing plastic usage from early stage of production design, driving a circular model with reusable/returnable water jugs.

Mr. Novian Amrah Putra, Chairman of Indonesia ISO Expert Association (IIEA), discussed how packaging and recycling operations can effectively comply with ISO standards where he stressed the importance of understanding the relevant ISO standards and how packaging manufacturers and recyclers can hurdle the challenges to achieve relevant ISO certifications through well-documented internal management and control of operational processes.

Another timely topic covered at the conference is the digital solutions to enhance Indonesia's recycling ecosystem by Mr. Hadiyan Fariz Azhar,  Executive Director of Indonesia Plastic Recycling Association (ADUPI). Mr. Azhar, who also serves as the Founder & CEO of PT Kita Bumi Global (KIBUMI) and Vice President of Digital Transformation at the Indonesia Circular Economy Alliance (InSEA), first discussed the association ADUPI, its programs and role in Indonesia’s recycling sector. He went on to discuss the benefits of digital solutions in adhering to the targets of the Extended Producers Responsibility (EPR) through the adoption of digital system.

An interesting presentation by Mr. Mustaqim, Product Development Manager of Holland Colours Asia, on the new breed of additives and their role in the production of sustainable materials for circular packaging highlights. Starting off with an introduction of Holland Colours Asia, he mentioned the trend towards increased use of recycled materials and the future of PET, as well as new material solutions that are aimed at improving rPET properties to make it suitable for food-grade packaging.

Two expert speakers from ALBA Group discussed the timely topic of driving circularity in ASEAN manufacturing – from global vision to local pathways.  Mr. Daniel Loo, Sales Manager of ALBA Asia PlasticsTrading Limited and Mr. Farhandra Ramdhani, Sales & Logistics Manager, PT ALBA Tridi Plastics Recycling Indonesia provided an overview on the ALBA Group’s cutting-edge recycling expertise that can boost plastic circularity in Indonesia. The company operates a recycling facility in Central Java, Indonesia and takes pride in the production of its FDA-certified food-grade rPET flakes and rPET pellets.

Mr. Teguh Maianto, Chairman & CEO of Packaging Development Federation (PDF) and Senior Business Manager of BOSTIK Indonesia discussed advanced technologies and laminating adhesives solutions for flexible packaging production. He cited the trends and drivers in the packaging industry and how these impact adhesives towards recyclability and cost-efficient production. He also shared the various types of laminating adhesives available and how these impact the overall product packaging.

Mr. Abednego Purnomo, Vice President Sales for Marketing and Tenant Relations of PT. Suryacipta Swadaya, shared the importance of strategic location for packaging manufacturing and recycling operations. In his presentation, gave an overview of the industrial sector of Indonesia and the attractions of the country as a production location for various industrial companies. He then focused on the logistical efficiency and infrastructure development – advantages that PT Suryacipta Swadaya provides Suryacipta City of Industry and Subang Smartpolitan.

Mr. Kumoro Wijanarko, Operations Manager of GS1 Indonesia capped the day’s presentations with how GS1 Standards can be maximized to implement sustainable and circular packaging. GS1 standards have been applied in diverse sectors and have been able to create a common language to identify, capture and share product data, ensuring important information is accessible, accurate and easy to understand. A key feature of this is the GS1 Digital Link which helps barcodes become web links - connecting a product's unique identity to online sources of real-time information that brands can control.

Factory Tour Highlights and Reflections

The tie-up between Ringier Events and PT Suryacipta Swadaya enabled the delegates to visit and receive orientation on the Suryacipta, City of Industry and Subang SmartPolitan, two industrial zones under the management of PT Suryacipta Swadaya. Ms. Binawati  Dewi, General Manager of Sales and Tenant Relations at PT Suryacipta Swadaya, introduced the two industrial zones and their advantages to locators. She discussed the infrastructure and other facilities offered by the two industrial areas that make them more conducive to the manufacturing operations of companies engaged in dynamic sectors such as packaging and recycling.

This was followed by an introduction on the Indorama Group, with focus on PT. Indorama Ventures Sustainable Solution Indonesia (IVSSI) by Mr. Rajat Bhatnagar, Site Head. The IVSSI recycling plant is located in the Suryacipta City of Industry and is one of Indorama Group’s state-of-the-art recycling plants in the Southeast Asian region. Indorama Ventures is a diversified company with international businesses that are integrated across its petrochemical value chain. Its footprint spans manufacturing operations at 114 locations in 32 countries, with market-leading positions in Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

Mr. Bhatnagar discussed each of the 8-step recycling process as part of the company’s commitment to World Without Waste. These involved de-baling, bottle sorting, flaking, float sinking, washing/rinsing/drying, flakes sorting, melting/extruding/pelletizing, and decontamination. These steps were demonstrated to the delegates during the tour around the state-of-the-art facility of IVSSI with representatives of IVSSI led by Mr. Bhatnagar explaining to the delegates the importance of each process.

 

Mr. Levi Li, Account Manager – BOPA Marketing Center, PT Changsu Industrial Indonesia.

 

Representatives of the  Xiamen Changsu Industrial Co., Ltd. was led by Mr. Levi Li, Account Manager, BOPA Marketing Center of PT Changsu Industrial Indonesia. The company’s factory in the Suryacipta City of Industry is being constructed with target to commence operation in January 2025. The company is one of the leading producers of high performance film materials. Its functional films are applied in such fields such as food, daily use products,  chemicals, medicine and industrial products. The PT Changsu Industrial plant in Karawang covers about 50,000 sq.meter including 30,000 sq.m. for the first phase which is currently under construction and projected to produce 50,000 tons of high-performance film material once in operation. With command of the world-leading process for film manufacture, the fifth generation of low-carbon equipment, and latest technology advantages, Changsu aims to provide excellent film products for customers worldwide.
