Blum-Novotest introduces its most compact and advanced laser measuring system yet
Blum-Novotest GmbH, a global leader in measuring and testing technology, has introduced the LC54-DIGILOG, the newest and most compact model in its LaserControl DIGILOG series. Specially developed for tool measurement and monitoring in micro-machining, the LC54-DIGILOG represents a major advancement in precision, compactness, and process reliability — all critical for manufacturers producing ultra-small, high-performance components.
The system was recently presented at EMO 2025 in Hanover, highlighting Blum-Novotest’s ongoing commitment to advancing digital and optical measurement technologies for next-generation manufacturing.
Meeting the Growing Demands of Micro-Machining
“As micro-machining evolves, so do the expectations for precision,” explains Winfried Weiland, Head of Marketing at Blum-Novotest. “With the new LC54-DIGILOG, we are setting new benchmarks for tool measurement in the micro range. It offers the full spectrum of functions of our proven DIGILOG laser measuring systems for tools with diameters between 5 µm and 16 mm, while being optimised for compact machine designs. Its range of innovations makes it the most powerful and precise system of its class.”
A direct successor to the long-established LaserControl Nano NT, the LC54-DIGILOG builds upon a legacy of reliability and accuracy—yet surpasses its predecessor across nearly all performance metrics.
Advanced DIGILOG Technology
At the core of the LC54-DIGILOG is Blum-Novotest’s DIGILOG technology, first introduced in 2017. Traditional digital laser systems generate only a handful of signals when the tool interrupts the laser beam. In contrast, DIGILOG captures thousands of data points per second, dynamically adjusting measurement speed to match the tool’s rotation. This allows each cutting edge to be measured individually and compared with ultra-high repeatability of 0.2 µm (2σ).
The system can automatically detect contamination or coolant residue on the tool, ensuring these do not distort the measurement results. It also identifies concentricity errors caused by dirt on the tool holder—helping operators maintain process consistency and reduce scrap.
Designed for Speed and Precision
With its refined optical system, the LC54-DIGILOG reduces measurement and testing times by up to 60%, providing significant productivity gains for precision manufacturers. The laser optics have been fine-tuned for the microtool range, achieving an optimised beam shape and a 30% smaller focus diameter than previous models. This results in measurement accuracy that outperforms even blue-laser-based systems.
A standout feature is the MicroTool Mode, automatically activated for ultra-small tools. This mode enhances accuracy further—enabling precise detection and analysis of tools that were previously too delicate to measure reliably.
Seamless Integration and Smart Evaluation
The LC54-DIGILOG seamlessly connects with BLUM’s LC-VISION software, an advanced platform for visualisation and analysis. LC-VISION provides an intuitive interface for configuring, visualising, and evaluating measurement processes. At EMO 2025, BLUM will also introduce a new GrindingControl function within LC-VISION. This innovation allows precise determination of actual grinding tool geometry, automatically calculating the optimal machining dimension and transferring it directly to the machine’s tool table.
For added convenience, the system integrates easily with popular CAD/CAM platforms such as Mastercam, enabling standard measurement routines to be incorporated directly into machining programs.
Collaboration for Smarter Manufacturing
Another key development from Blum-Novotest is its collaboration with SCHUNK, the renowned clamping technology specialist. Future SCHUNK battery-powered clamping devices will be compatible with BLUM’s BRC radio technology, enabling seamless, wireless, and automated communication between clamping systems and machine tools.
“This interoperability brings tremendous advantages for users,” explains Weiland. “Existing BLUM measuring systems equipped with BRC can easily integrate SCHUNK devices — simplifying setup, reducing installation time, and increasing production flexibility.”
The partnership was showcased at EMO 2025 in Hanover, underscoring both companies’ shared commitment to advancing intelligent and connected manufacturing solutions.
Setting New Industry Standards
With the LC54-DIGILOG, Blum-Novotest continues to push the boundaries of laser-based tool measurement. Combining ultra-high precision, shorter cycle times, and intelligent connectivity, the system is engineered to meet the stringent requirements of modern micro-machining environments—from watchmaking and medical device production to advanced aerospace and electronics manufacturing.
The LC54-DIGILOG demonstrated how advances in digital and optical technology are redefining the standards of precision measurement in modern manufacturing.
