Semiconductor / Electronic Chip
ESD industry revenue increased by 10.3% year-on-year to $5.47 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025, according to the ESD Alliance.

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC), and advanced semiconductor technologies is continuing to reshape the global electronic system design (ESD) industry. According to the latest Electronic Design Market Data (EDMD) report released by the Electronic System Design Alliance (ESD Alliance), worldwide ESD industry revenue increased 10% year-over-year during the fourth quarter of 2025, highlighting strong momentum across the semiconductor design ecosystem.

The ESD industry, commonly referred to as the electronic design automation (EDA) sector, provides the software tools, semiconductor IP, hardware platforms, and design services used to develop modern integrated circuits and electronic systems. As semiconductor architectures become increasingly complex, EDA technologies are playing a critical role in enabling faster chip development, advanced verification, and system-level optimization.

Global ESD revenue reached approximately US$5 billion in the fourth quarter of 2025, driven largely by growing demand for AI accelerators, custom ASICs, advanced-node processors, automotive semiconductors, and chiplet-based computing platforms. The continued growth of generative AI infrastructure and hyperscale cloud computing has significantly increased investment in semiconductor design and verification technologies.

Among the strongest-performing segments was semiconductor intellectual property (SIP), which recorded substantial growth as chip developers increasingly adopted reusable IP blocks to accelerate product development and reduce engineering complexity. High-speed interface IP, memory controllers, AI accelerator cores, and chiplet interconnect technologies are becoming essential components of modern SoC design.

The rapid adoption of AI computing is also placing greater demands on EDA software capabilities. Modern AI processors often contain tens of billions of transistors and require sophisticated simulation, verification, and power optimization tools. In addition, the rise of advanced packaging technologies such as 2.5D integration, 3D stacking, and heterogeneous chiplet architectures is increasing the complexity of semiconductor design workflows.

To address these challenges, EDA vendors are expanding support for AI-specific chip development, including verification tools optimized for AI accelerators, packaging-aware design software, and system-level simulation platforms. Semiconductor companies are increasingly integrating AI into their own design processes as well, using machine learning algorithms to improve layout optimization, timing closure, and design productivity.

The Asia-Pacific region continued to represent a major growth market for the ESD industry, supported by strong semiconductor manufacturing activity, government investment initiatives, and expanding AI infrastructure development. North America also maintained strong growth momentum driven by hyperscale cloud providers, AI chip startups, and advanced semiconductor R&D investment.

Beyond AI applications, growth in automotive electronics, industrial automation, 5G infrastructure, and edge computing is further contributing to rising demand for advanced semiconductor design technologies. Software-defined vehicles, autonomous systems, and connected industrial platforms all require increasingly sophisticated semiconductor architectures supported by advanced EDA tools and semiconductor IP ecosystems.

As semiconductor innovation continues accelerating, the ESD industry is becoming an increasingly strategic component of the global electronics supply chain. The combination of AI-driven chip development, advanced packaging complexity, and growing demand for custom silicon solutions is expected to sustain strong long-term growth across the electronic system design market.
