Mitsubishi Motors has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with FPT Japan Holdings to explore collaboration in software and digital technologies, signaling the automaker’s accelerating push toward software-defined vehicle (SDV) development and AI-driven mobility solutions.

The agreement will focus on potential cooperation in software engineering, digital platforms, IT services, and artificial intelligence technologies aimed at strengthening Mitsubishi Motors’ long-term competitiveness as the automotive industry rapidly shifts toward CASE (Connected, Autonomous, Shared, Electrified) and SDV architectures.

Both companies are also considering the future establishment of a joint venture, although discussions remain at an early stage. Under the MoU, the partners will evaluate specific collaboration areas and possible business structures in the coming months.

The partnership reflects the growing pressure on automakers to strengthen software capabilities as vehicles become increasingly dependent on digital systems, over-the-air updates, AI integration, and advanced electronic architectures. Industry analysts view software expertise as a critical differentiator for next-generation mobility platforms, particularly as SDVs gain momentum globally.

FPT, one of Vietnam’s largest ICT and software engineering companies, has been expanding aggressively in the automotive technology sector, providing digital engineering, embedded software, and AI services to global OEMs and suppliers. The company said the collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors could help accelerate AI- and data-driven transformation across the automotive industry.

Takao Kato, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors, stated that combining Mitsubishi’s mobility expertise with FPT’s software engineering resources could create new business opportunities for both companies. FPT Chairman Dr. Truong Gia Binh added that the partnership aligns with Japan’s broader push toward advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital transformation.

The announcement comes as Japanese automakers increasingly seek technology partnerships to accelerate SDV development while managing rising software investment costs. Mitsubishi Motors has recently expanded its strategic collaborations across electrification, AI, and digital mobility as competition intensifies in the global automotive technology market.
