How do you securely clamp a workpiece inside the smallest pockets and grooves without adding extra machining steps?

roemheld news ImageAs automotive components become increasingly complex, manufacturers are seeking workholding solutions that can securely clamp parts without compromising accessibility or adding unnecessary machining operations. Addressing this challenge, ROEMHELD has introduced a new hydraulic compact clamp featuring patented kinematics that enables direct clamping inside narrow pockets, grooves and recessed areas previously difficult to access.

Unlike conventional compact clamps that require additional clearance for the clamping arm to swing into position, the new design employs a unique two-stage movement. The clamping lever first travels horizontally to the target position before moving vertically downward to apply the clamping force. This patented motion allows precise workpiece positioning while significantly reducing the installation space required around the component.

The design offers particular advantages for machining cast aluminium components, grey cast iron parts, moulds, dies and fixtures commonly used in the automotive industry. By eliminating the need to machine temporary clamping points that are later removed, manufacturers can reduce machining time, tooling costs and overall production complexity.

Despite its compact footprint, the hydraulically double-acting clamp delivers a 6.5 kN clamping force at a maximum operating pressure of 220 bar, with an 8 mm horizontal stroke and a 4 mm vertical clamping stroke. The ability to clamp at any point throughout the vertical stroke enables reliable positioning even when workpieces exhibit dimensional variations, improving process stability in high-mix manufacturing environments.

Designed for flexible integration, the clamp is available in a plug-in configuration with either a standard clamping lever or a customizable blank that can be machined to suit specific workpiece geometries. A quick-change mechanism further reduces setup time when switching between applications, making it suitable for flexible production cells and prototype manufacturing.

To support automated machining operations, ROEMHELD also offers versions with optional pneumatic clamping or unclamping position monitoring, enabling process verification and improving reliability in automated production lines. The combination of compact dimensions, high clamping force and integrated monitoring makes the system well suited for modern automotive manufacturing, where component geometries continue to become more intricate while demands for productivity and precision continue to increase.
