CHIRON Group showcases how integrated machining, automation and digital manufacturing solutions are enabling manufacturers to improve productivity, flexibility and efficiency, supporting the next generation of high-mix, precision production environments.

 

As manufacturers continue to balance productivity, flexibility and cost pressures, machine tool builders are placing greater emphasis on integrated manufacturing solutions rather than standalone equipment. Across industries ranging from aerospace and medical technology to precision engineering, the ability to combine machining, automation and digital production management is becoming increasingly important for maintaining competitiveness.

 

This direction is reflected in the latest developments from CHIRON Group, which will present a range of automated machining solutions during AMB 2026 in Stuttgart. Rather than introducing individual machines in isolation, the company is highlighting how machine tools, automation cells and digital manufacturing software can work together as an integrated production ecosystem.

 

According to Markus Unterstein, CFO of CHIRON Group, precision machining remains the foundation of manufacturing performance, but long-term competitiveness increasingly depends on the seamless interaction between machining technology, automation and digital production processes.

 

 

Compact Automation for Precision Manufacturing

One of the key areas of development is compact automated production for precision components. CHIRON's Micro5 XL platform combines high-precision micromachining with integrated automation, allowing manufacturers to increase machine utilisation while minimising floor space requirements.

 

Two automation concepts support different production requirements. The Variocell PALLET enables automated pallet handling for repeatable precision production, while the Variocell UNO incorporates robotic workpiece handling and secondary process integration. Such systems are particularly suited to manufacturers producing intricate components where both accuracy and throughput are critical.

 

Process Integration Reduces Handling and Cycle Times

Instead of relying on multiple machines, manufacturers are increasingly adopting multifunction machining centers capable of performing several operations within a single setup.

 

The MT 715 illustrates this trend by combining milling and turning with additional technologies including gear cutting and polygon turning. Consolidating these processes reduces intermediate handling, shortens production lead times and helps maintain consistent part quality throughout the machining cycle.

 

For sectors producing small- to medium-volume components with increasing complexity, process integration also minimises work-in-progress inventory while simplifying production planning.

 

Flexible Platforms for Large Components

Large workpiece machining presents different challenges, particularly where production volumes fluctuate between one-off parts and medium-sized batches.

 

To address this, CHIRON has further developed its MILL series with a modular machine concept that allows manufacturers to configure machines according to specific production requirements. Features such as a wear-free torque swivel head help maintain machining accuracy while reducing maintenance requirements, while standardised machine assemblies simplify servicing and spare parts management.

 

The modular approach also enables manufacturers to adapt machine configurations as production needs evolve without redesigning entire manufacturing systems.

 

Automation for High-Mix Production

High-mix, low-volume manufacturing continues to drive demand for flexible automation rather than dedicated transfer systems.

 

CHIRON's automated pallet handling solutions demonstrate this shift. The FZ 16 S five-axis machining center, equipped with an enhanced Variocell PALLET system capable of handling 26 pallets, is designed to support frequent job changes while maintaining long periods of unattended operation.

 

Similarly, the newly developed pallet changer for the FZ 19 S five axis extends automation capability to larger and more complex workpieces, particularly those found in aerospace and precision engineering applications.

 

These developments reflect a broader industry movement toward autonomous machining, where machine utilisation is maximised without sacrificing flexibility.

 

Digital Manufacturing Extends Beyond the Machine Tool

Automation alone is no longer sufficient to optimise production. Digital coordination of machines, production orders and automation systems is becoming equally important.

As manufacturers continue to face skilled labour shortages, shorter product lifecycles and greater production complexity, integrated manufacturing systems that combine machining, automation and digital management are expected to play an increasingly central role in future factory operations.
