The coronavirus pandemic has created a huge impact on the manufacturing industry as reflected by the massive production stoppage in industrial centres. This scenario has not spared the company headed by Lin Jun, Shanghai Yudi New Materials Technology Co., LTD., which is engaged in the colour masterbatch sector. While expressing a certain level of concern on the impact of the pandemic, Mr. Lin was quick to shift the conversation to the positive initiatives undertaken by the industry. Because of the severity of the epidemic, he said, the demand for medical protection necessities including medical masks, protective clothing, kits, etc., has increased sharply. As a result, the colour masterbatch industry has taken advantage of the situation by rapidly developing the PP melt-spray and electret masterbatch for masks, which not only guarantees the raw material supply of epidemic prevention materials, but also encourages the growth of the colour masterbatch industry despite the adverse trend. The colour masterbatch and electret masterbatch for mask melt-spray cloth produced by Yudi were in short supply at one time.
Mr. Lin Jun, Chairman, Shanghai Yudi New Materials Technology Co., LTD.
Mr. Lin graduated from South China University of Technology in 1988 with a major in plastics machinery. After graduation, he got a job at Shanghai Telecom Bureau. The job was stable and decent in China, where university students were rare at that time, but Mr. Lin gave up the "iron rice bowl" a few years later and devoted himself into what he had known and learned since college - the plastics industry - which he truly loved. As Mr. Lin pointed out, from 1992 to 2022 he moved from being a technical director to fully own and run his own company. To date, he has been in the plastics industry for a full 30 years.
Established in 1996, Shanghai Yudi New Material Technology Co., LTD. was founded by Mr. Lin Jun. The company is headquartered in Shanghai, with two large intelligent production bases located in Shanghai and Zhejiang. It is a high-tech enterprise integrating research and development, production and sales of masterbatch products. Yudi mainly produces colour masterbatch for colouring plastic materials such as PE, PP, PVC, PS, HIPS, ABS, PC, PA, PET, etc., full biodegradable colour masterbatch and all kinds of functional masterbatch. These products are suitable for plastic colouring in various processes such as injection moulding, blow moulding, extrusion, wire drawing, coating and other processing technology. It serves many industry giants in European, American and Asian markets, and is one of the first enterprises to develop and focus on customized colour masterbatch business.
Growing alongside the dynamic plastics industry
Mr. Lin said Yudi is developing with the Chinese masterbatch industry. The company attaches great importance to product research and development. Every year, it invests funds to send technicians to learn new kinds of advanced technologies and actively conduct technical exchanges with European and American counterparts. So far, the Yudi brand has obtained more than 60 related technical patents. In the next few years, the company's production capacity will increase by 20%, and Yudi strives to dip its toes into the capital market and become a listed enterprise when conditions are ripe.
With the rise of the global wave limiting single-use plastics, the proportion of biodegradable plastics is expected to increase to become an inevitable trend of this industry’s development. Mr. Lin and his team have made relevant plans related to this. As early as July 2019, the biodegradable masterbatch products produced by Yudi have obtained the testing certificates of relevant authorities in Mainland China, Europe and the United States.
Raw plastic is colourless transparent or natural white, and directly using it to create products does not result in eye-catching and attractive characteristics. Therefore, giving plastic products polychromatic colour is a sacred mission for plastic processors, said Mr. Lin, who along with his colleagues, is a team of plastic colouring "magicians." For him personally, this is not only the ideal, but also a long-term passion and mission.
