The global essential oils market is valued at USD 25.86 billion in 2024 and projected to reach USD 56.25 billion by 2033, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 9.0 percent. Europe currently leads with nearly half of the market share at 49.4 percent, while Asia Pacific stands out as the fastest-growing region, expanding at a 9.8 percent CAGR. This momentum is driven by the wellness and self-care economy, rising demand for natural and clean label products, sustainable and traceable sourcing, and innovation that extends beyond fragrance applications.

The clean label movement is a strong influence on beauty standards and consumer expectations. A majority of consumers now prefer products free from parabens and sulfates, while more than half of formulations include organic ingredients. Certified natural sourcing has become a priority for over half of beauty brands, and manufacturers are increasingly emphasizing plant-based formulations. Eco-friendly packaging is also gaining traction, with nearly half of consumers prioritizing sustainable solutions. Together, these shifts are redefining how beauty products are conceived, formulated, and delivered.

Vietnam is positioned to benefit from current global trends mainly because its tropical climate and diverse ecosystems allow year-round cultivation. With a long tradition of herbal medicine, the industry has more than 5,000 medicinal plant resources at its disposal. Thus, regional diversity strengthens this advantage: northern Vietnam is known for cinnamon, star anise, litsea cubeba, and peppermint; central Vietnam produces cajeput, turmeric, ginger, and black pepper; while southern Vietnam specializes in lemongrass and citrus oils. This mosaic of climate zones ensures resilience and a broad portfolio of botanicals.

The country’s essential oil industry is deeply rooted in cultural heritage. The legacy of Hai Thuong Lan Ong, a pioneer of Vietnamese traditional medicine, continues to influence practices today. Herbal remedies have been passed down through generations, with over 5,000 species documented for therapeutic and cosmetic use. Ancient steam bathing rituals for detoxification and relaxation, along with holistic wellness practices that combine plants, rituals, and wisdom, provide cultural authenticity that resonates with modern consumers seeking natural and meaningful products.

Despite these strengths, Vietnam’s essential oil industry faces challenges not unique to some other countries. For example, quality inconsistency, low traceability, limited value addition due to raw exports, and fragmented supply chains impact the country’s competitiveness.

Although Vietnam produces between 60,000 and 80,000 tons of medicinal herbs annually, many are still imported. The transition from raw material exports to certified, processed, and innovative ingredients is essential to unlock long-term value.

Sustainability is central to this transformation. True sustainable sourcing requires balance across environmental, economic, and supply dimensions. Environmentally, it means responsible farming, biodiversity protection, reduced chemical use, and ecosystem preservation. Economically, it involves stable farmer incomes, fair value distribution, and rural development opportunities. On the supply side, it demands traceability, stable quality, and predictable sourcing capabilities. These priorities align with global trends: in 2023, more than half of EU27 beauty R&D jobs referenced sustainability, and 80 percent of EU consumers considered environmental impact important.

Traceability is becoming critical as global brands increasingly require transparency on ingredient origins, carbon footprint visibility, ESG reporting, and supply chain compliance. Responsible sourcing documentation is no longer optional but a prerequisite for international competitiveness. The Value of Beauty Report 2025 underscores sustainability and transparent sourcing as major priorities, with standardization initiatives driving improvements in environmental performance.

Vietnam can fully capture global opportunities by overcoming fragmentation, strengthening traceability, and investing in sustainable, high-value ingredient ecosystems. With reforms in certification, supply chain integration, and sustainability, Vietnam has the potential to transform from a raw material exporter into a global leader in clean label, culturally authentic essential oils.
