Q&A with Chaiwat Nantiruj, Chairman and CEO, Eka Global

FOUNDED in 2003, Eka Global specializes in longevity packaging solutions, specifically preserving the quality and freshness of food without refrigeration for up to two years. Despite significant losses in its early years, the Thai company has grown to rank among the world’s top five brands in longevity food packaging, with production facilities in Bang Pakong, Thailand, and Pune, India producing over 2.85 billion units annually.

Now with the use of sustainable and long-lasting food packaging on the rise, Eka Global is pushing the boundaries of design and functionality. Its products are made with high-barrier materials that resist heat and oxygen penetration, and use Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) technology to enhance the freshness of minimally processed foods. So far, Eka has over 80 customizable designs for products such as fruits, baby food, rice, seafood, dairy, and pet food.

The following interview with Mr. Chaiwat Nantiruj, Chairman and CEO, explores Eka Global’s market strategies, innovations, and sustainable practices, highlighting the company’s vision.

What inspired Eka Global’s commitment to longevity packaging, and how has the market evolved in response?

Eka Global is the first producer of longevity packaging in Thailand. Its journey originated from my family’s plastic and mold business, while I found longevity packaging to be a unique and value-added market opportunity.

Eka is now focused on becoming an innovative-driven company that embraces the circular economy. We partner with global brands like Nestlé to integrate R&D into our manufacturing processes and continue to expand internationally.

Why did you establish a production facility in Pune, India?

India is a high-potential market due to its large population and strong demand for packaged sweets and ready meals, and demand for packaging such products is rising by 30-40%. This drove our decision to establish as facility in Pune last year.

After opening a sales office five years ago, we launched the Pune plant with an annual capacity of 300 million units to meet India's rapidly growing demand. The market expects a 100% annual increase in ready-to-eat foods and premium pet food consumption, to serve our 300–400 Indian SMEs.

Our products effectively address the challenge of extending shelf life, particularly in overcoming transportation difficulties.

What strategies is Eka Global implementing to capitalize on India’s packaging market growth?

We leverage our facilities in Thailand and India, with capacity of 2.85 billion units per year, ensuring a steady supply for the rapidly growing market. Through product innovation and customized packaging solutions, we help Indian SMEs reduce food waste and extend shelf life, enabling market expansion.

As sustainability becomes a key market demand, how does Eka Global balance eco-friendly solutions with the durability required for long shelf-life products?

We prioritize sustainable and eco-friendly solutions, offering packaging that is 100% recyclable and biodegradable. With certification by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) in 2021, we are committed to sustainability and carbon reduction across the manufacturing processes.

In 2022, we launched three green products: A bioplastic (PLA) packaging made partially from natural raw materials such as cassava; a fully biodegradable packaging, and a post-consumer recycled (PCR) packaging made from recycled plastic resins.

How is artificial intelligence (AI) utilized in Eka Global’s operations, and how does it impact product innovation?

Our key competitive strengths lie in transforming with AI as well as sustainable packaging innovation. Since last year we have studied and transformed our operations to align with global digital trends.

Our new packaging innovations include airline meal trays which feature separate compartments for rice and curry, enhancing user convenience. For the growing pet food market, we designed pet food packaging with ergonomic handles to allow pet owners to feed their pets more comfortably.

How do you foresee AI and advanced technologies shaping the food packaging industry?

In-house Generative AI is an interesting tool for big data and data analysis to stay ahead of market trends and reduce operational costs. It also drives product innovation and market adaptability.  Environmental issues and trends are also shaping the food packaging industry. They drive innovation in energy efficiency and resources consumption reduction.

How does Eka Global address challenges such as cost pressure, raw material availability, and the need for scalability in international markets?

Our greatest challenge is to acquire talent, promote cross-cultural collaboration between Thai and Indian teams and invest in training to develop our human resource capabilities.

Beyond financial goals, what milestones does Eka hope to achieve in the next five years?

Sustainable growth is our priority. We aim for continuous product innovation and a stronger commitment to environmental sustainability.
