Ringier's online conference on personal care and cosmetics held on 1 April 2022 was attended by over 500 delegates across APAC.

The personal care and cosmetics industry consists of several segments and categories, ranging from hygiene to skin nutrition and overall wellness. The industry is rapidly regaining lost ground from the impact of COVID, with the Southeast Asian market showing the fastest recovery. According to iSTRATA, revenue in this segment reached 25.44 billion dollars in 2020 and the market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.3 percent annually from 2020 to 2023.

 

In line with this, Ringier Events held a virtual conference on 1 April 2022, titled ASEAN Personal Care and Cosmetics Manufacturing & Packaging Summit. They were joined by business partners Dase-Sing Group, Huituo, Spec-Chem, Shanghai Chengxing M&E Co., Milliken Asia, and Guangzhou Reachin Chemical Co., Ltd. The programme was also supported by the ASEAN Cosmetics Association, Accord, The Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association of Singapore, VOCA, CCIPP and Beauty Packaging.


Over 500 delegates from across Asia attended the online conference.

Opportunities, trends

The agenda was designed to provide delegates with new market knowledge and keep them abreast with sustainable options for ingredients, production and packaging.  The first session focused on Personal Care and Cosmetic Ingredients, with the first presentation about Australian regulatory and sustainability issues for cosmetic and personal care products. Bronwyn Capanna, Executive Director of Accord Australasia, was the presentor.

 

A growing trend in the business is clean beauty. This was explained by Ms Doris Wang, who is currently the Application Director of Spec-Chem Industry Inc during her presentation. She also explained how her company’s use of purer actives help achieve the goal of ‘clean beauty’.

 

Likewise, Mamun Haque, Founding & Managing Director of Greenleaf Cosmetics, spoke about opportunities in manufacturing clean beauty in Australia.

 

The session’s last speaker, Fahrizal Rifki is PZ Cuzzon’s R&D Solution Manager. His topic further discussed clean beauty development, and also on baby care innovation.

 

Packaging design and innovations

The second session was about Packaging Innovation and Sustainable Packaging. Andrew Gan, President of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association of Singapore, led the first presentation on Re-thinking the role of packaging in new product development.


Tony Huang, executive assistant of DASE Sing Packaging Technology, also presented on technical advancements and commercial aspects in the use of shrink sleeves, and on how companies can be more sustainable in packaging material choices.


Part of packaging innovation is in the process of filling products and capping them with efficiency. For this, Anny Lyu, Export manager at Changzhou Huituo Technology Co. Ltd, gave a presentation about intelligent filling and capping solutions.


Michael Hsu, Sales manager of Shanghai Chengxing Machinery and Electronics Co. Ltd discussed the benefits from one stop HPC production.


Darrell Chung, Milliken Asia’s Sustainable Packaging Manager, meanwhile discussed the key trends in sustainable packaging innovation.


Jamie Matusow, editor-in-chief of Beauty Packaging Magazine, also pitched in from her knowledge of trends and challenges in personal care packaging.


Matthew Seal, R&D manager of Unilever Vietnam. He talked about his company’s journey to sustainable packaging.


Gia Linh, Vice president of Vietnam Association of Oils, Aromas and Cosmetics, gave a very informative presentation on  the current state of the cosmetic market in Vietnam.
