The surge in sensitive skin concerns in Southeast Asia is a reflection of the current world we live in where air pollution, UV radiation, climate extremes contribute stress on the skin’s natural defenses. In densely populated parts of the region, prolonged exposure to fine particulate matter and heatwaves has been linked to increased skin sensitivity, inflammation, and barrier disruption.
Meanwhile, skin care routines that contain actives like retinoids, AHAs, and exfoliants are meant to enhance skin health. But their misapplication and overuse can do more harm than good. Stress, dietary shifts, and even post-pandemic hygiene habits (frequent handwashing and mask-wearing) are said to cause skin tightness, redness, and reactivity.
Sensitive skin isn’t just impacted by external factors like pollution or harsh skincare because food choices also play a role in how the skin reacts and heals.
All these stressors make sensitive skin a growing concern, according to dermatologists.
Barrier repair
The skin barrier, which is made up of lipids and corneocytes, helps protect against allergens, pollutants, and pathogens. When compromised by internal and external stressors, it becomes vulnerable to inflammation, sensitivity, and premature aging.
Sensitive skin formulations now prioritize skin resilience over instant results. Ingredients like ceramides, panthenol, niacinamide, and postbiotics are said to restore barrier function and soothe irritation.
Clean beauty has become the answer to the rise in sensitive skin. The movement heralds transparency, minimalism, and safety especially in products marketed for daily use. Formulations are expected to be fragrance-free, preservative-light, and dermatologically tested.
This convergence has led to a new category of “functional beauty,” where products are designed not just to beautify but to heal, protect, and support long-term skin health. This shift is particularly resonant in Asia, where cultural preferences for soft, hydrated, and “mochi” skin (supple a smooth complexion) align with barrier-focused care.
PT Mandom Indonesia Tbk: Localizing barrier repair
PT Mandom Indonesia Tbk is a regional player attuned to this transformation in Southeast Asia. As a subsidiary of Japan’s Mandom Corporation – known for its Barrier Repair skincare line –the company brings barrier science into the local context.
Mandom’s Barrier Repair brand, launched in Japan in 2007, emphasizes skin health through ceramide-rich formulations and gentle textures. PT Mandom Indonesia has the opportunity to localize this expertise, tailoring products to the humid climate, pollution exposure, and lifestyle habits of Southeast Asian consumers.
By integrating barrier repair into its product development and marketing strategies, PT Mandom Indonesia is well-positioned to meet the rising demand for sensitive skin solutions — not just as a cosmetic trend, but as a wellness imperative.
