A new study published in scientific journal, Nature's npj Aging shows that a precise vegan amino acid blend is more effective at improving skin hydration and texture than traditional collagen products.
The study, led by Prof. Collin Ewald at ETH Zurich, documents a four-year research journey – from model organisms to clinical trials in humans. An exact 3:1:1 ratio of the amino acids glycine, proline and hydroxyproline was identified, which stimulates collagen synthesis most effectively.
The Swiss supplement brand AVEA worked closely with the researchers to develop a consumer-ready product based on these findings and to bring this new approach to market. The AVEA Collagen Activator contains exactly the same ingredients used in the study and is now available worldwide. In markets such as Switzerland, Germany, Italy and China, the product quickly became a successful bestseller.
The final human study (N=66), conducted at the Hautwerk Clinic in Zurich, showed significant results. The participants were analyzed monthly using VISIA skin scanners and corneometers. Within three months, the measured parameters of skin quality improved significantly: skin moisture increased on average by 34% while skin texture improved by 8.5%, resulting in a significant increase in skin elasticity.
Since the collagen market is large and characterized by contradictory statements, the study, published after scientific peer-review, creates reliable evidence that targeted supplementation can measurably improve skin quality.
This is one of the rare cases where a supplement has been successfully transferred from basic research to a consumer-ready product with validated clinical data in humans in a short period of time.
AVEA is a Swiss company focused on science-based supplements that address key characteristics of aging – including energy and NAD+ metabolism, collagen production and skin health, joint mobility, gut health, blood sugar balance, and sleep. The company invests in clinical research, collaborations with universities and independent tests, and translates the latest findings from longevity research into accessible, understandable products. In addition to the collagen study, other studies on supplements for sleep and daily energy are currently underway.
