Advanced manufacturing describes the use of innovative technologies and methods to improve the quality, efficiency and sustainability of products and processes in the manufacturing sector. In Singapore, this is a key pillar of its economy and a leader in innovation and sustainability.
At the heart of Singapore’s manufacturing industry is a visionary leader who has steered his business through several crises and challenges. James K.W. Wong, President of Singapore Advanced Manufacturing Technology Association (SAMTA), an association that aims to lead the advancement in innovation, integration, and internationalisation for the manufacturing sector.
From the exhibition floors of the recent Manufacturing EXPO Thailand, International Metalworking News for Asia interviewed James about the association’s journey, activities, and his unyielding commitment to advanced manufacturing.
SAMTA was established in 2022. It was founded by a few passionate and enthusiastic veteran entrepreneurs who wanted to contribute back to the industry and promote sustainability, innovation, integration, and internationalisation in the manufacturing sector. The group is one of the five Industry Transformation Maps (ITMs) that aim to drive advanced manufacturing across different sectors in Singapore.
James explained that SAMTA is part of Singapore’s efforts to become a global leader in advanced manufacturing Industry 4.0. The association aims to lead the advancement in the 3 “I”s: Innovation, Integration, and Internationalisation, where it collaborates with industry experts and partners to enhance business and development sustainability for the manufacturing sector.

Helping association members
Aside from promoting innovation and partnership, James stated how SAMTA helps its members in the manufacturing industry in various ways, such as Internet of Things, Robotics & Automation, Big Data & Cloud Computing, and 3D Printing & Additive Manufacturing. These technologies can help improve the quality, efficiency, and productivity of manufacturing and equipment, as well as create new possibilities for design and innovation.
“SAMTA can facilitate networking and collaboration among the manufacturing stakeholders, such as distributors, retailers, and consumers. It can organise and participate in various events and exhibitions to showcase and promote the music industry manufacturing products and services, as well as exchange insights and best practices with other industry players,” he remarked.
James added, “SAMTA can propose courses and training programs to enhance the skills and competencies of the manufacturing workforce. The association can support its members to acquire the knowledge and expertise on advanced manufacturing technologies and solutions, as well as develop their creativity and innovation skills. SAMTA can also collaborate with other educational institutions and organisations to offer specialised programs for the manufacturing sector.”
Objectives and Activities of SAMTA
SAMTA is one of the five Industry Transformation Maps (ITMs) with the goal of drive advanced manufacturing across different sectors in Singapore. ITMs are part of the government’s strategy to help Singaporean companies and workers adapt to the changing global landscape and seize new opportunities. The association’s vision is be a leading organisation that fosters a vibrant and innovative advanced manufacturing ecosystem in Singapore and beyond. Its mission is to promote sustainability, innovation, integration, and internationalisation in the manufacturing sector.
He mentioned that SAMTA provides various services and benefits to its members, such as networking opportunities, industry insights, training programs, business matching, overseas missions, trade shows, and seminars. These activities are designed to help members
enhance their capabilities, expand their markets, and collaborate with other stakeholders in the industry.
James also revealed that SAMTA also engages in advocacy and policy dialogue with the government and other relevant agencies to address the challenges and opportunities faced by the advanced manufacturing sector. It also participates in various initiatives and platforms that support the development and adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies and solutions.
Commitment to advanced manufacturing
Aside from SAMTA, James is also the founder and managing director of O.E Manufacturing, a company that produces high pressure precision hydraulic cylinders since 1982. He has a strong passion for R&D and product engineering, and has successfully built up the brand of hydraulic cylinders internationally. James is also a mentor for young entrepreneurs, a trainer for industrial positions, and an advisor for family businesses. He has received recognition for his achievements and contributions through the Singapore E50 competition. With these positions, James has a lot of experience and expertise in the manufacturing industry, and that he is involved in both local and regional markets. James is a respected scholar and a leader in the field of advanced manufacturing technology.
The past years have been characterised by frequent and transformative shifts impacting every facet of manufacturing businesses. While these shifts may present existential challenges for manufacturers, the right tools and strategies can facilitate thriving and success.
