TOKYO, Japan - Full-scale operation has begun in August for the expanded facility of Ajinomoto Brazil (Ajinomoto do Brasil Indústria e Comércio de Alimentos Ltda). In 2012, the company, a consolidated subsidiary of Ajinomoto Co., Inc. (Ajinomoto Co.), invested BRL 47 million (approximately JPY 2 billion) for the expansion of an existing factory and to increase production capacity for Brazil’s top brand of flavour seasonings, 2 TEMPERO3 Sazón?. With the upgrade, production capacity is expected to increase by about 40%, enabling the company to continue meeting growth in demand and to further expand its business in elsewhere in South America, in addition to Brazil.
TEMPERO Sazón, a core product of the company, has gained acceptance amongst consumers in Brazil since its launch in 1988. The home-use product has maintained 5% average annual growth in sales volume from fiscal 2008 to fiscal 2012. As of 2013, the 25th anniversary of the product’s launch, a cumulative total of some 3.5 billion 12-sachet bags of the flavouring has been sold.
Ajinomoto Brazil sales are steadily growing. It accounts for about 10% of the JPY 200 billion in sales of the Ajinomoto Group’s overseas consumer foods business. The South American market for flavour seasonings accounts for 18% of the global flavour seasonings market, which Ajinomoto Co. estimates at 1.1 million tonnes in 2011.
