The production of plastic bags is a highly competitive sector given the large number of companies engaged in this segment. In tropical countries like the Philippines, the use of plastic bags for making ice and other frozen food products, as well for other purposes, has given rise to a number of companies specialising in the production of these packaging products. International Plastics News for Asia (IRNA) talked to White Horse Plastic Manufacturing’s Owner and General Manager, Alison Martinez,

IRNA: What are the products that you manufacture and your target markets?

Mr. Martinez: We produce several types and sizes of plastic bags -- ranging from clear low-density polyethylene (LDPE) ice bags to high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sack liners. We also produce crisp polypropylene (PP) garment bags. In the Philippines, ice bags are widely used given the hot weather where there is always demand for ice and other frozen snacks and food products. Clear plastic film bags are also in demand in the medical, industrial, and commercial sectors. Aside from the generic sizes available, we also offer customised sizes or meet orders for special size and thickness requirements.

IRNA: What makes your products stand out in this highly competitive market?

Mr. Martinez: Production of clear plastic bags has been a highly competitive one because there are quite a lot of suppliers in this area. We try to move ahead of our competitors by producing high quality products matched with excellent customer service. Our customers trust us – and this trust has helped a lot in making us work hand in hand with our customers in meeting their specific needs. As a result we have earned the loyalty of our customers that even with the rough times experienced in the past, we managed to survive and grow.

We have established this trust by ensuring that the quality of the plastic we serve is from 100% virgin materials and that each production batch undergoes the strictest quality control assessment. For instance, our clear plastic bags for ice and frozen snacks comply with the requirements for strength. This has been made possible through years of painstaking research and development, combined with our continuous monitoring and assessment of customers’ demand and market trends.
