AUSTRALIAN oyster aquaculture Angel Oysters has obtained certification from Friend of the Sea, an international certification programme for products from sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.
The sustainability recognition is for Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas) farmed in the waters of Smoky Bay, a coastal hamlet on the South Australian Eyre Peninsula. It confirms that Angel Oysters implements a responsible farming operation that complies with the Friend of the Sea standard.
The company’s operation includes an adjustable long-line system that monitors water flow throughout the farms. This allows sea grasses to regrow and rejuvenate, and has negligible impact on the sea bed. An efficient traceability system, meanwhile, ensures full tracing of oysters from spat throughout their life on the farms to their destination and the product line.
Angel Oysters, which also holds the eco-label National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia (NASAA) Certified Organic, continues to invest in infrastructure improvements related to recycled posts and baskets.
“Friend of the Sea certification is an important international confirmation of the natural origin of our oysters,” said Isaac Halman of Angel Oysters. He added that oysters have minimal impact on the environment and are one of the most sustainable seafood choices.
Friend of the Sea engages internationally recognised independent certification bodies to undertake company audits using the most current scientific data. This international certification program is relied on by more than 400 companies in over 50 countries to assess the sustainability of their seafood products.
