FOLLOWING in the footsteps of India, Israel and more than 20 countries within the European Union, a bill to ban all animal testing on cosmetics testing has passed the Assembly in Brazil earlier this month. The bill was sponsored by Representative Ricardo Izar and members of the Assembly.
Cruelty Free International will continue to campaign for the bill to be passed, which now moves to the Senate. The global anti-animal testing organization had been petitioning the president of Brazil for an early vote on the bill.
Once passed, the bill will go into effect within the next 90 days, and will ban cosmetic animal testing where alternatives have already been established. However, animal testing will still be permitted in rare cases of “novel ingredients” specifically developed for cosmetic products—at least until an alternative method has been established or within the next five years, whichever occurs first.
