APAC's economy growth boost Japan's machine tools market

According to their latest report, Technavio analysts expect the machine tools market in Japan for 2015-2019 is expected to reach USD 15 billion by 2019 growing at a CAGR of over 6%. 

This rise in production of machine tools in Japan can be attributed to economic reforms taken by the present government to pull the economy out of the recession. The stimulus package provided by the government has initiated some major reforms in the country's manufacturing sector.

“In addition, the machine tools industry in Japan is mainly export oriented, hence it is greatly influenced by global economic conditions. The steady economic recovery in the US will be the major driver for the machine tools market in Japan,” says Bharath Kanniappan, lead analyst at Technavio for automation research. 

Stimulus package for economic development

In December 2014, the government of Japan approved a stimulus package of USD 29.1 billion to pull the Japanese economy out of recession. The stimulus package was geared towards boosting consumer spending and reviving economic activity in the country.

About half of this amount was to be spent in the reconstruction of infrastructure that was destroyed in the recent natural disasters whereas the remainder was to be used to provide subsidies for low-income households. The government also made cuts in corporate tax and overhauled regulations in the energy and healthcare sectors.

The GDP growth has shown some improvement as compared to 2014, and exports have also picked up because of the recovering global economy. As per the World Bank, inflation is also expected to rise. Thus, all the above factors will drive economic activity in the region thereby resulting in increased production of machine tools in the country.

Growth in APAC's economies

The machine tools market in Japan is highly dependent on exports because 81% of machine tools produced in the country are exported to other regions.

The performance of the economy in APAC greatly influences Japan's machine tool industry as it constitutes around 60% of the total exports. The APAC region is expected to grow at a steady rate which augurs well for the machine tools market in Japan. Countries in APAC, such as India, are expected to benefit from low oil and commodity prices, which will help to accelerate manufacturing activities. Growth will be driven by the rising domestic demand for goods, lower interest rates, and healthy labor markets.

Recovery in the developed economies will also support exports from APAC leading to growth in the manufacturing sector. “This steady growth in the manufacturing sector in APAC will in turn, lead to increased demand for machine tools from Japan,” says Bharath.

Increased demand for numerical control and computerized numerical control machines

Increased development of NC and CNC machines has been observed in the machine tools market in Japan. This has led to a shift from conventional machines, which are controlled manually, toward new and advanced machines operated using programmed commands and computers.

NC and CNC machine components are designed using CAD and CAM, delivering a highly accurate machine that can operate efficiently and effectively. End-users are increasingly adopting NC and CNC machines that increase product quality and reduce human effort and time.
