Automation control at Budweiser in Foshan

BREWERIES of Anheuser-Busch InBev, whose flagship brand in the United States is 'Budweiser', use the same processing and operational standards for their facilities worldwide. It is no different for Budweiser (Foshan) Brewing Company Limited in the Shanshui district in Foshan, a city in the southern province of Guangdong in China. Just like the original, the Foshan brewery is designed and constructed to operate based on the highest brewing technology standards. Likewise the facility boasts of the same environmentally friendly and energy-saving features that might be found in counterpart breweries in the USA.

Built in 2009 for a total capital investment of USD63 million, the Foshan plant has a production capacity of 2.6 million hectolitres of Budweiser and 'Harbin' beer (one of China's oldest beer brands with a large market share in the South), with potential for future expansion. Almost RMB 1.2 million have been invested in the advanced wastewater treatment facility alone, to ensure the treated wastewater complies with the strict sanitary standards before drainage. In fact, 90% of wastewater can be reused since the water recycling system can annually treat and save up to 4 million hectolitres. Thanks, too, to the advanced boiler flue gas purification plant, over 90% of sulphur dioxide can be removed. In the aspects of environmental friendliness and energy savings, therefore, the Foshan facility has obtained a leading position in the domestic brewing industry.

For food and beverage enterprises that have high requirements for continuous production, the optimisation of formula parameters and the maximised production time mean maximised benefits. Technologydriven breweries require a dependable management system and automated process control system to execute standardised operations. At both the brewery and filtration plant at Budweiser Brewery in Foshan, a Braumat system from Siemens has been customised to automate control of the
whole process from raw material to waste material. Control software configuration customised and installed by Siemens Industrial Automation Ltd Shanghai (SIAS) includes automation of vessel operations, the CIP system, yeast recovery and yeast injection, and the entire filtration plant, amongst others.

Modular control system
In the beer industry, a rapid response to changes in customers' tastes and the market environment are the necessary conditions for success. A wide range of products, flexible product arrangement and the ability to implement modifications as smoothly as possible are therefore essential. To meet the different needs of productions, Braumat has a special order management system that realises its goals through flexible graphic edit and batch-based order management.

Process engineers can alter technological parameter conveniently, customise production flow, and debug new products. In addition, the automation control system has well-functioning batch report and incident record system, which make the traceability of the final products a reality. The comprehensive analysis system also provides with perfect history records. The deviation from beer flavour, for instance, can be traced back to the quality of malt and hops, to a mistake in one process or to a short-term breakdown of one control equipment. This mechanism finally ensures safety for customers.

In order to produce new products in the Braumat control system, one needs only to modify related formula parameters. The unique flexibility greatly reduces the cost of research, development and test of new products. The system's powerful functions such as data entry and recording, tendency recording and document saving will allow, for example, the operator to edit the batch list and orders in advance, and the system will automatically put into production according to the requirement of batch list and planned schedule.
