New Euromonitor research looks into total global daily nutrient purchases through packaged food and soft drinks
teens having a drinkCONSUMER packaged food and soft drinks purchases worldwide average 765 calories daily for a total global value of 1.5 trillion calories, according to Passport: Nutrition, a new research published by Euromonitor International.

Although the global average is lower than the recommended intake for adults of about 2,000, more than 40% of the population worldwide is overweight and obese, according to Euromonitor nutrition analyst Lauren Bandy.

She forecasts the daily calorie purchase will rise by 90 more calories in 2019.

Countries in North America and Western Europe buy more than 1,500 calories. Mexico purchases the most calories a day with 1,928 calories per person, 380 calories more than the U.S. or equivalent to an extra slice of pizza per person daily in Mexico.

India buys 150 calories daily, and China 510. Germany buys nearly twice as much fat per capita daily than Japan, whilst France buys more calories from bread each day than India does from packaged food and soft drinks combined.

The market research company’s Passport: Nutrition examines the total per-person daily nutrient purchase through packaged food and soft drinks products. It tracks energy, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugar, salt, protein, and fiber in 54 countries globally.

“This analysis helps address rising concerns surrounding nutritional value in food while building a picture of what people eat in different countries,” Ms. Bandy added.

By depicting a brand’s contribution to the purchase of nutritional content, the research identifies diet contents globally and the impact of nutrients. The data allows companies and governments to understand consumers’ taste and food preferences around the world.
