With a target completion in 2017, BASF has started construction on a new Innovation Campus in Navi Mumbai, India. The company is investing about €50 million through its wholly-owned subsidiary, BASF Chemicals India Private Limited. The facility is expected to accommodate around 300 scientists who will conduct research in such areas as crop protection, process development and polymers.
This latested project forms part of BASF's goal of generating €30 billion of sales worldwide by 2020. To achieve this ambitious goal, BASF is further developing research organization and bundling its competencies in three global centers with the headquarters of Advanced Materials & Systems Research based in the Asia Pacific region.
The BASF Innovation Campus (Mumbai) will be a key hub of BASF's global research and development (R&D) network, and, next to Shanghai, BASF’s second major R&D location in Asia Pacific. Martin Brudermüller, Vice Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, BASF SE, said that the Asia Pacific region is facing enormous challenges that BASF addresses with innovation from chemistry. The company operates a strong global R&D network, and is now strengthening its investments in innovation capacities in Asia Pacific. BASF is setting up research facilities in Asia Pacific in the areas of electronic materials, battery materials, catalysis, mining, water treatment, polymers and materials.
The BASF Innovation Campus (Mumbai) will host global research activities and regional and local development activities. The new building will include multiple features designed to minimize energy use, including a secondary façade, a reflective roof, water chillers for air conditioning, and photovoltaic panels. Drinking water will be supplied through dispensers using a filter technology, eliminating the need for disposable bottles. The building will also maximize use of natural light through a glass-roofed atrium that directs daylight into the building core.
