INNOVATIVE packages are the key in the fight against food loss and wastage, which every year runs up to 1.3 billion tonnes1 worldwide. More effective barrier layers, germicidal films and freshness indicators are intended to help products to keep for longer and halt consumers’ throwaway mentality. However, despite all these improvements, companies have to keep a constant eye on process efficiency and on costs. Energy and raw materials are becoming more expensive, even as consumers want to do more for the environment. Help is on hand from packaging producers and machine manufacturers – with material-saving packaging solutions and more efficient production lines.
At interpack 2014 in Düsseldorf, packaging technologies and materials that heighten food safety and are environmentally sound, and efficient packaging machine concepts that feature increasingly automated efficiency will hew to the central theme of reducing food loss. Reducing spoilage will also be the central theme at the Innovationparc Packaging, where exhibitors at this special show will be presenting their ideas on how food can be protected better. The SAVE FOOD2 Conference on 7 and 8 May, experts on entire food value chain, from production, retailing and packaging through to logistics, will share approaches and programmes to reduce losses during production, post-harvest treatment and storage.
