
Under the terms of the agreement, Tate & Lyle has taken an equity stake in BioVittoria, and BioVittoria has granted exclusive global sales and distribution rights to Tate & Lyle for its monk fruit extract.
Tate & Lyle will market the product under its PUREFRUIT brand and support the development of the line of products with sales, research, marketing, applications and product development. BioVittoria will continue management of the monk fruit supply chain, including seedling cultivation, fruit supply, and natural processing.
The Hamilton, New Zealand company's product was the first natural, calorie-free, fruit-based sweetening ingredient to achieve US FDA regulatory approval, when the monk fruit extract received GRAS (Generally Recognised as Safe) status in January 2010.
Monk fruit is native to Southeast Asia. Its pulp is concentrated into a natural, calorie-free sweetener that is up to 300 times sweeter than sugar and can be formulated into a variety of foods including beverages, dairy, cereal, confectionery and bakery products.
