HONG Kong’s Centre for Health Protection has learned that a second person in Canada has developed avian influenza A (H7N9), the spouse of the first patient reported on Friday, and of two new cases in Guangdong. This bring the total reported global number to 523.
The couple returned to Canada from China on January 12 on an Air Canada flight. Neither needed to be hospitalised and they are both recovering. Both residents of British Columbia are now recovering in self-isolation and does not need to be hospitalized.
The Centre for Health Protection said it will continue to work closely with overseas health authorities to monitor the latest developments. The H7N9 cases in Canada are the first reported in North America to date.
In Guangdong, the new avian flu cases a 48-year-old man in Jieyang who has died, and a nine-year-old girl in Shanwei who is in stable condition.
There are now 504 confirmed H7N9 cases on the mainland, including the new cases in Guangdong.
