Social media, mobile devices, the internet and other forms of digital technologies connect people around the world. This global connectivity can be a driving force toward greater transparency of corporate conduct, and has been paving the way for redefining sustainability in the petrochemical industry, say Peter L. Cella, president and chief executive officer of Chevron Phillips Chemical Company LLC (Chevron Phillips Chemical).
Mr. Cella added that social media platforms allow the petrochemical industry to gather insights and identify potential issues , and this medium should be used to the industry’s advantage.

Mr. Peter Cella, President and CEO of Chevron Philips Chemical
Mr. Cella addressed the “Petrochemical Growth v. 2030: How the Connected World is Redefining Sustainability,” at the Gulf Petrochemicals and Chemicals Association (GPCA) Annual Forum in Dubai. He discussed sustainability, how it has evolved over the years and the changing expectations on transparency and corporate conduct in a digital age are impacting the industry.
Social media has made the transparency process a lot easier for business, and has become a powerful tool toward information dissemination. User activities on Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms lead to almost immediate action, both positive and negative.
In his speech, Mr. Cella explained that customers, business partners, employees and other stakeholders want to work with transparent companies that openly display good corporate conduct, and social media resources are readily available to communicate the positive actions taken by companies toward sustainability.
