Materials and technology solutions to meet the future applications of plastics and rubber brought the biggest ever gathering of exhibitors and visitors at this year's CHINAPLAS, Asia's biggest show for the plastics and rubber industry. The edition breached the 100,000 mark with 109,858 visitors attending the four-day event in Shanghai. This figure is 16.77% higher than in 2011 edition, and up 34.9% against 2010 attendance. "CHINAPLAS has enjoyed the benefits from the continuous economic recovery since last year especially in Asia. The strengthening of the Asian economy helped boost the confidence of our exhibitors, leading to an upsurge in the number of exhibitors and size of the venue. Thanks to the global trend of green manufacturing and China’s 12th Five-Year Plan, the show brought in many new developments, new technologies and materials which feature low carbon emission, eco-friendliness, and energy saving, amongst others," said Stanley Chu, Chairman of Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd., the show’s organiser.

There were also more foreign pavilions this year. Thailand pavilion made its first appearance, whilst the Korean pavilion staged a comeback. Aside from these two countries, the other international pavilions were those from Austria, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Taiwan, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States.

Also noted was the surge in the number of foreign visitors with 28,110 overseas visitors, accounting for 25.59% of the total. They came from 150 countries and regions with Korea, India, Japan, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Russia, Hong Kong and Iran as the ten top origins, with 62.83% share of the total overseas visitors. Over 50% of overseas visitors came from Asia excluding Hong Kong/Macau and Taiwan (55.43%), followed by Europe (10.88%), Middle East (9.49%), Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan (8.93%), America (8.57%), Africa (5 %) and Oceania (1.7%).

Focus on a "green" future
This year is widely regarded as another crucial one for the global economy with political and environment issues affecting overall industrial performance in key markets. New concepts were introduced at this year’s CHINAPLAS, and these focused on environment protection and energy saving. Interest in bioplastics development was visible during seminars and discussion on natural bioplastics. More than 70 seminars were conducted, and these included such hot topics affecting the application of plastics and rubber on automobile and auto parts, tyres, electronics, optoelectronics, home appliances, cables, packaging, medical and personal care, household items, as well as in railways and aviation.

This year’s theme, "The Future is in Plastics and Rubber," is a reflection of how global industry players have achieved so much in bringing breakthrough solutions to the industry’s quest for viable materials and technologies that will become part of the future. The Future Zone featured creative and life experiences on the future of plastics and rubber. Its highlight, the "Future Car" design contest is a knowledge-sharing event that drew participation from various industry experts and professionals in an effort to find the most innovative use of plastics in automotive design.

Taking a slice of China’s fast-moving industries
DESMA Rubber Injection Machinery (Wuxi), Ltd presented solutions for the plastics and rubber industry. Since 1965, DESMA has been producing machines and moulds for the rubber industry in Fridingen, and has grown to become one of the world’s leading manufacturers of elastomer injection moulding machines and molds. Mr. Martin Schürmann, DESMA Managing Director, has seen China evolving from a manufacturing centre into an innovative manufacturer. In this scenario, DESMA has been taking initiatives to meet this transformation.

"I always tell our clients that DESMA is an inexpensive supplier of solutions for the plastics and rubber industry, but we are not cheap. We are providing custom-made solutions where our clients can obtain return on investment in the shortest time possible in terms of quality improvement, better material and energy efficiency. This is what we demonstrated at this show," according to Mr. Schürmann. The company’s products allow for huge energy savings, at about 40% to 50% less than competitors.
