Codex' highest decision-making body adopted values for labelling purposes for a number of vitamins and minerals

The Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) adopted Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) supported by IADSA for 11 nutrients to be included in the Codex Guidelines on Nutrition Labelling.

At its meeting in Rome from 1-5 July 2013, the CAC, the highest decision-making body in Codex, adopted values for labelling purposes for vitamins K (60mcg), B6 (1.3mg) and B12 (2.4mcg), Biotin (30mcg), Folate (400mcg), Niacin (15mg), Pantothenate (5mg), Riboflavin (1.2mg), Thiamin (1.2mg), and the minerals Calcium (1000mg) and Iodine (150mcg).

The Codex Guidelines on Nutrition Labelling require food products bearing nutrition claims to state their nutrient content on labels.

“We are pleased that the Codex Alimentarius Commission has adopted these NRVs because they reflect the latest research on nutritional requirements,” said IADSA Director of Regulatory Affairs David Pineda Ere?o. “These are important because the NRVs agreed by Codex will be implemented by governments worldwide and will have an impact on the labelling of most nutrition claims. IADSA has provided and will continue to provide scientific and technical assistance to Codex on this matter as needed.”

NRVs are still to be set for 15 more nutrients, and these will be discussed at the next meeting of the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Specific Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) in November this yearAir Jordan
